Asylum, and Amicus Horror
There, I just finished my FTV portion of the challenge. Yeah, I know I'm way behind some of you, but these days, my mind wanders too much for me to get these damn movies watched. Now, I only need 3 re-watches to get 'er done.
So Amicus was a pretty big deal, apparently, huh? I'll admit, I don't know much about these movies. I suppose that, being Britain-based, they're a lot like Hammer movies. However, I notice they put out their fair amount of anthology movies, too. And like Hammer, they feature a lot of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and a few other prominent players at the time, like Michael Gough, Patrick Magee, Herbert Lom, etc.
I've only seen Scream and Scream Again '70 (garbage), Tales from the Crypt '72 (good), Vault of Horror '73 (okay), and Madhouse '74 (very good). I'll throw on anything starring Peter Cushing, and he had a bit part in this one.
The movie starts out with some dramatic stock music that most people would view as a joke in this day and age. A guy is trying to get into a job at an asylum, so the main guy (Patrick Magee) gives him a quest to find out which person in the asylum isn't who he/she seems to be. This, of course, leads us to an anthology.
Patrick Magee seemed to portray disabled people a few times. In this movie, he was in a wheelchair, like A Clockwork Orange (also was blind in Tales from the Crypt).
So some of these stories are alright. Like I do with most movies these days, I kinda zoned out for some of them, but the first skit was decent, involving a guy who dismembers his wife(?), and her wrapped up body parts come after him. Then, we have stuff about a guy tailoring a magical suit for some dumb reason or another... then Charlotte Rampling is convinced she's innocent of some frame job... then, this last skit is kinda stupid, but kind of awesome at the same time. Herbert Lom has this automaton/robot/doll of himself, and this story bleeds into the wraparound segment to lead us to the conclusion that surprised none of us.
Still, it's a decent watch. Even somewhat mediocre movies like this are boosted by the presence of horror icons of the era. There's just something classy about those guys.
Thoughts on Amicus movies? https://junkepics.com/film/?category=1&tags=amicus&sort=value
You don't hear them talked about much, but they did a few pictures from the mid-60s to mid-70s.
