Bloody Murder - A late-90s Jason knockoff
The slasher genre was in a decline in that dreadful era known as the 90s. Everyone was burned out on horror, so the only thing left to do was rip off the stuff that worked so well nearly 20 years earlier, and that's what we have here. A total Friday the 13th rip-off in many ways, Bloody Murder features a hockey-masked killer in coveralls who stalks a camp as the counselors set it up for the summer.
Hell, there's even a character named Jason whose name is mentioned all throughout the movie. In the tradition of the first F13 movie, we have a bit of mystery surrounding the identity of the killer. Is it the local legend Trevor Moorhouse, or is it one of the counselors using him as a scapegoat?
The movie itself isn't that bad, actually. Probably a bit generic by today's standards, but I've definitely seen worse. The kills are okay, but they don't show much gore. Probably not a very big budget in this one, but the production values were pretty adequate for this type of movie.
This movie even had a goddamn doomsayer, most definitely based on Crazy Ralph, because he's a staple to this sort of genre. Gotta have a doomsayer.
It also came out in the onset of that world wide web thing called the internet, and they try to utilize emails to seem hip. Otherwise, they don't worry about keeping things isolated, because cell phones still weren't a big thing yet.
It makes you wonder just how far you can go when ripping off something. Jason wore coveralls. Jason had a hockey mask (albeit a less concealing one). Jason used all sorts of weapons. Jason was barely in the first movie. Camp wasn't even open for the children in the first movie. I'm not complaining though. I like this type of shit for some reason.
Not a high body count, but you could do worse. Look for it on youtube. There's also a sequel with a higher imdb rating that might be worth looking into.
