Red Velvet (2008)
You guys, this movie was made for us. It has a pathetic rating on IMDB, 4.something. But I'm pretty sure that's just because most people watching it wouldn't understand the references. I think it's pretty interesting.
The beginning makes me think of Harold Pinter plays... just the way the two main characters talk to each other. Well, like Harold Pinter, but FUNNY. Henry Thomas is hilarious. I shouldn't say too much about that.
I am gonna hope that a few people here have already seen it, and might have things to say. I will just say that it was clearly made for horror fans to appreciate. I could see little homages to Suspiria, Toolbox Murders, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, random Rob Zombie movies, The Shining and/or Donnie Darko, Pet Sematary, David Lynch stuff of course... possibly a little Pieces... possibly a little Witchboard... probably some other stuff I'm missing.
Just start watching, and see if you get hooked. I thought the conversation in the laundromat, which evolves into a lunch date at an Asian restaurant, was really, really funny. Just the way they were being really sarcastic to each other, almost snarling at each other at times. Then it takes things in various unexpected directions... I was sort of correct when I guessed about what the ending would be, but I certainly didn't catch everything they had going on.
