I Know What You Did Last Summer
It's been about 20 years since I watched this movie, so I gave it another go last night just to see how it held up. It was one of those popular 90s horror movies spawning from the success of Scream in 1996, and everyone was jumping on that bandwagon.
The movie was based on a novel, but like most teen-screams from the late 90s, the screenplay was written by Kevin Williamson. He was the go-to guy in that era, and everybody was so young and fresh to Hollywood back then, it's just crazy.
You could tell right away that Jennifer Love Hewitt was going to be the final girl of this movie. Just the way that she carried herself in that guilted do-gooder kinda way, but man... she was hot. I was focused on her tits the whole movie, and some shots were centered around them, and I couldn't complain. Of course, there were times when she'd wear outfits that don't show any skin at all, but fortunately, she didn't stay in those for too long.
I feel a lot of people were expecting Sarah Michelle Gellar to put up a bigger fight, because Buffy was fresh on everyone's mind at that point. At least she fared better than she did in Scream 2. She was also pretty hot, and she did a lot of screaming.
Freddie Prinze Jr. is pretty wooden, and Ryan Phillippe is always in a pissy mood, but they're alright. It's fun to see Johnny Galecki get killed with an ice pick, because that dude makes way too much money for that shitty show he's in. Then, we have Bridgette Wilson, who was big in the mid-90s, then fell off the face of the earth.
So the story isn't too bad here. Kids gotta cover up their tracks, but someone saw what they did and comes back for them a whole year later, hence the "last summer" bit. The movie spans 3 different years, and yet the sequel still references "last summer", but we'll forgive that... for now.
I like how the killer didn't kill 'em off right away. He liked to fuck with them a bit, to make them paranoid, but somethings in the movie were pretty improbable. How did he get from A to B so quickly and so often, and how did he clear out the trunk full of crabs and a dead body in a minute? Oh well. It is what it is.
Not a terrible 90s teen horror movie. It was kinda fun going down memory lane, but I'm sure I'll forget this movie again in a few days...
