Horror Movies that are similar story-wise?

I always like to be on the look-out for horror movies that I like to see is there a similar movie out there to them.

Here is what I consider to be similiar:

Long Weekend (1978)/The Territory (1981) - both involving hiking trips with with Mother Nature fighting back
Duel (1971 TV Movie)/The Car (1977) - desert settings involving powerful vehicles.
I Am a Ghost (2012)/I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) - both poetic introspective haunted-house films involving female protagonists.
Sole Survivor (1984)/Final Destination (2000) - death hunts down and collects people in the form of destiny.
Martin (1977)/Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (1975) - protagonists are not vampires, but need to drink blood.
I Zombie: The Chronicles of Pain (1998)/Colin (2008) - documents physical and mental deterioration.
Cube (1997)/Saw (2004) - strangers involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps.
The Brotherhood of Satan (1971)/The Night God Screamed (1971) - both involving cult of satanists.
The Babysitter (2017)/Better Watch Out (2016) - both horror-comedies involving babysitters.

Can anyone think of any in their opinions?

Ooh, those dirty fools!!

Johan must really not like me. He made his own forum, about the same damn shit we talk about here. https://horrorntrash.freeforums.net/ is of the same design as imdb2, a site that we had both expressed our disdain in, but fuck it so long as it ain't this place, right?

Stab me in the fucking back, why don't ya? All to make a shoddy knockoff of a site that was designed to cater to all and anyone's requests? I've spent thousands of dollars and hours to learn how to code this site. I live in sleaze and eat ramen fucking noodles so there can be a dedicated forum for epic trash discussions out there, and because certain users have decided to make issues out of nothing, we experience a new divide in our already diminished user base? Fuck that!

I thought Johan and I were on the same page on a lot of things. I thought he understood that we need unification, but the guy runs off to start another forum with some generic free host. Now, one of our most valuable contributors decides to split in favor of a barebones message board system, leaving us all in even further divided camps. And who does he made his moderator? Tromafreak, because God forbid that guy exist on a forum where his mod status and thus masculinity are in question. Yeah, that's right. Johan makes his "head mod" a guy who tried to ban him from here. More than once.

What's the hell is going on here? The dude likes to makes himself out to be a victim, but tromafreak has been totally unreasonable about this whole fucking mess. He acts like there's preferential treatment or something, but there isn't. He's had a bug festering up his ass about Der ever since the notorious "Cars 3" rants, and that somehow put ME at fault with troma, because he'd gotten very distant from me since then. Guilty by association, I suppose. Angry that he can't be "head mod" if I allow myself to get programming assistance through der's account. Boo fucking hoo.

I don't interfere with user/user discussions, because I've got better things to do than pick sides, and he's treated me like villain ever since. Sure, I know the guy can be a bit irritable at times, but I always got along with him before. A lot of my most favorite films are movies he's introduced me to, and I genuinely thought we were on good terms until he raged at me in a private message, saying in so many words to go fuck myself, and ran away from his own goddamn website. I don't like saying this is my site, because it's a group effort. I want others to realize that this is their site, too, but nobody seems to get it these days. Tromafreak didn't even bother reading what I had to say about it, and that hurts. He didn't even get to read the part where I tell him to go fuck himself.

The whole thing is frustrating. The guy just wants to throw away everything we've been working on for half a decade, because he doesn't like Der? That's some real bullshit right there. And Johan joining a freeforums site? That's a step backwards. What do these people want out of a website? Standard, soulless machinery that lets them feel like the proprietors of a new and untamed frontier of lost message boarders seeking a new place to call home? Fuck no. Nobody cares about message boards anymore. It's all about facebook and apps now, and they're putting themselves in an even smaller margin of activity now. If Johan was upset that his posts didn't get enough exposure, then why the hell would you narrow that scope even further with a site comprised of users--fewer users than your normal userbase--who for some dastardly reason or another decided to flee this place because they were "offended" by users... and strangely enough, some of which whom are currently over there now?

If they think they're mad, how the hell do they think I feel? They walk away from a place I built for them, in favor of a shoddy knockoff of this place? It's fucking stupid, is what it is. Well, I can be stupid, too. They try to rip this place off with free forum software? Well, I've built a shoddy knockoff of their shoddy knockoff:

https://trashepics.com/app/ff/

As you can see, I've made a rather ugly and shallow skin that's somewhat functional. I might add mobile support later. I might just kill myself instead.
emoticon

If those guys ever get their heads out of their asses and stop sucking each other's dicks over there, there's a real website over here waiting for them.

Motel Hell (1980)

image Now this here is one strange little movie. If you go in blindly, it's going to take you a moment to figure out what this movie is about, but when it hits you, you know you're in for a fun ride.

So who is Farmer Vincent? Who is Ida? What are we doing in this movie to begin with? Rory Calhoun plays a charming southern gent who runs a motel and jerky business with his fat and smug sister. Yeah, I've already said too much...

This movie came out in October 1980. What a fun fucking movie this would have been to see when it came out. People would need to know why a guy wearing a pig's head is weilding a chainsaw. Oh, what imagery. I love how he laughs maniacally during that chainsaw duel, too, but I'm getting ahead of myself here. This movie has a lot of stuff going on, and it's almost mesmerizing to watch it all play out.

Vince and Ida are still pretty shady people, but fortunately for them, their own dim-witted brother is the sheriff. He's a clueless horndog. He's the hero, and he's incompetent, so this movie is all about the villains.

But villains? What are they doing anyway? Well, it becomes pretty obvious when they're talking about how they ate their dog before, and Vincent laughs the line, "Meat's meat, and man's got to eat!"

Even though this came out before the 80s got its groove/cheese, it still had a lot of it, but not enough to ruin the mood of it by making it too goofy. It has gore, titties, perverts, inept cops, traveling rock bands, health inspectors, hypnosis, drive-in movies, and a great and atmospheric rural setting to work with. Oh, and most importantly, it has... Wolfman Jack, playing a sleazy televangelist. I think each scene of this movie serves a purpose, and it's generally just a fun movie to watch.

I love the way they harvest humans. Force-fed, probably shitting and pissing themselves in their dirt hole, but that's why they wash 'em good before they cook 'em! Vincent has his secret family recipe, and he knows how to run his business. Of course, this all comes crashing down because he fucks up. He falls in love. Ida has a strange jealousy about that, often trying to kill the girl he likes. So much zany shit going on in this movie that it all just seems normal in the end. After all, they do present Farmer Vincent as a rather sympathetic character, until the end, when he puts on that pig head...

MGM Midnite Movies had a great double feature of this and "Deranged: Confessions of a Necrophile" (1974). Both twisted tales of rural american butchers.

Imdb trivia:

The movie's original screenplay was originally a darker more disturbing piece with bestiality, a lot more violence and was not a black comedy.

Harry Dean Stanton was originally approached to play Farmer Vincent, but declined.

I would have loved to get some bestiality points for this movie, but I think the end result is pretty entertaining either way.

Martin (1978)

How did he do it? How did George Romero make not one, but two masterpieces in one year?! Some may not like Martin as much as I do, but this movie resonated with me so much when I first saw it. I remember the days of discovering old school horror movies by the legends of the genre, such as Carpenter, Craven, Argento, Romero... Such a fun time to be alive!

This unconventional family drama is disguised as a vampire movie, but it's all about the writing. His first cut was about three hours long, so wtf was that going to be about? Probably the black and white "flashback" segments, fleshed out to the max?

Either way, I think it's important that a director can embelish his story to the point where he has to omit parts in order to convey a tighter paced story. Then again, there are certain movies like Dawn of the Dead that should never end. Romero could have probably made that into a tv show, because he was very hands on with his movies, doing multiple things like writing, directing, editing, etc. He put a lot of detail into those early movies of his, and it shows. I always found Martin to be one of Romero's most intricate movies.

John Amplas is an interesting guy, but I haven't seen much out of him. He has bit parts in other Romero movies, like the skeleton in Creepshow's "Father's Day" segment, a gang member in the swat opening of Dawn of the Dead, a mime in Knightriders, doctor Fisher in Day of the Dead, and then a villain John Russo's "Midnight". Plus, his imdb pic is the coolest fucking thing ever: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0025355/ I still need to see Toxic Zombies, also.

The gloomy/angelic score is good, I love the grim ultra-70s look of it, and I love the cast. They're all great, including the crazy old man Cuda, who kind of looks like the KFC guy, only angry.

One of the great things about these reputable horror directors' earlier films is that they would all have their regulars, and they would always work well together. I think it's important for directors to get these dynamics ironed out so they can pump out cool movies one after the other.

Like the other aforementioned classic directors out there, Romero had his regulars, and they're awesome. Tom Savini has a decent role, and he also doesn't have a mustache. Weird seeing him without his regular facial hair. His character Arthur is banging Romero's then wife Christine Forrest's character "Christine". Plus, that old guy who always shoots the wrong guy in zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead and Flesheater is there at the beginning on the train. Apparently, Lincoln Maazel who plays Cuda is in Romero's lost movie "The Amusement Park", which I hope gets a release date soon. That movie sounds awesome.

Martin, though? Martin is the vampire masterpiece of a man whose career is known for zombies, which is to say it's overlooked by a lot of people, and I think that's a shame. Then again, Martin is only a small story about a family suffering from inherited madness, but the execution is quite perfect, in my opinion.

There was a period where I was obsessed with this movie. I'd make time to watch it ever few weeks. I miss the days when I could zone out to the latest (vintage) horror titles I could find. Somehow, it doesn't really happen that way anymore. I watch these once favorites less and less often, and I guess it's because I burn out, but then again, there aren't many movies that can affect an up-and-coming horror fan as much as the pioneers who basically invented the genre. Martin has always been one of my favorites.

new challenge moderator!

So Ballz will be the new challenge moderator! He will be responsible for running the host queue and aproving challenge submitions, not that I expect him to be scrutinous but no one wants to do the same challenge two months in a row or really in the same half year period I'd think, but that will all be up to him!

@Ballz if you would please make your own thread and make it a sticky. Other than that you have free reign over rules, regulation, time lines, etc... have fun and thank you!

Necrophilia and Rape

So I have an interesting question.

While you clearly can't rape a dead body, can it be considered rape if you interend to revive or reanimate the corpse?

For example if a person broke into a woman's house, stopped her heart, penitrated her and then restarted her heart, was it a rape, necrophilia or both? It feels like a terrible loop hole in the law that could lead to some wierd deffenses.

Just fyi this is coming from watching Flesh for Frankenstein, not some wierd place of desire.

My side of the story

You guys (and I'm mostly referring to Box and Der) have obviously been trying to make me react by the "Ooh, those dirty fools!!" topic. Yes I have created my own board. However that I made it in an attempt to ruin TE that is not true. You can ask all the people I have sent an invitation to. And I invited also people who had left TE or became inactive or never were active in the first place. A few of them joined like Gottfrid, Smerd and sushistoner. Others like Hey Sweden, psychotronicbeatnik did not.
Of course that led to an accusation I was dividing TE even more.

That Gymno so nicely says I do not have the skills to make a place like TE that I guess true but that I'm incompetent I don't think so. I have been on a Dutch speaking movie board called MovieMeter for years and most of the time I'm running a movie related project on there (challenges, KO's, drafts). Right now I have set up a horror top list project where members sent in their top 50 horror movies. Around 50 people did send in a list. I have been a member there since the imdb boards were still running.

I joined both Zed's place and TE to remain in contact with the mostly English speaking people I got to know on the horror board. I have actually learned a lot from them over the years and consider myself pretty knowledgable about the horror genre now. O f course with a small community that is getting smaller it's hard to find mutual interests and I eventually got tired like spending hours on a review or essay with very little feedback. Box was eager to know why I didn't like Russ Meyer's movies but he never reacted. Naturally I was thinking ok fuck it, I'm not going to waste my time on that any more. I think only Troma and sfpx reacted like they mostly do when I put in such an effort.

There were conflicts sure. The conflict I had with Onyx and Troma dates back from the days from Zed's place. I have said a few times I have reconciled with them years ago just like me and Vincent reconciled. But for one or the other reason some people are still not convinced and that I should still hate them. Contrary to the accusations I'm not being pushed, brainwashed or whatever by Troma or Onyx. I have not set up that board out of pity for them. They did not demand to be mods, I made them because they were my first members. I also gave Onyx some extra rights so she could do something in terms of design. And more importanly to keep someone like Victory out. No matter what you do Victory always seems to find us, lurking forever on TE and now also on my board. Despite all the efforts he always seems to find a way in.

Also my board actually exists since August last year. I just quickly set it up in case I really got enough of TE (politics mostly put me of) but things got better for a while. While I can go into detail about why I eventually was like ok that's it I'm going to actually put this board into use, I think Vincent described it pretty well already.
Don't go do something you'll regret like offing yorself. Let Johan do what Johan's gonna go do. I don't think he did it to spite you, more like he don't care for your buddy so much. I've noticed Der, like myself, doesn't have a filter and that will sometimes put others off. Being brutally honest has its costs.

I really wanted things to work out but that last conflict with Der was the drop for me. Ballz gave me one good advise avoid politics discussions and do not make family members moderators.

Larry Cohen was the man - RIP

He did a bunch of good sleaze in the 70s and 80s, like the surprisingly decent killer baby trilogy It's Alive, the Maniac Cop trilogy (writer), and The Stuff. Are you eating it, or is it eating you?

I want to see more of his movies. He had a bunch, and they had good casts of b-movie regulars like Michael Moriarty and Fred Williamson. He did a few good collaborations with William Lustig, too.

Lost another good one. RIP
