Ash vs Evil Dead

When I searched TE for this show, I got a bunch of articles from Feedproxy and Dreadcentral. I'm pretty sure there have been threads here about it, weren't there?? I guess I could be remembering stuff from the shout box. Anyway, Box, if you want to attach this post to any pre-existing thread about the show that you can find, that's fine by me.

I just wanted to call attention to a great moment in the show: when Ash meets his daughter Brandy, in the first episode of season 3, called "Family." Within just a couple of minutes, his poor daughter has to deal with meeting him (which is a lot to deal with), and also seeing both her mom and her best friend brutally slain by Deadites. Well, Ash sort of kills her best friend, but the friend was already possessed/killed by a Deadite, so... but, whatever, I just wanted to call attention to the way Ash introduces himself to her. Just think about it for a minute. He's MEETING HIS DAUGHTER for the first time ever, having had no idea she even existed until this episode. MEETING HIS DAUGHTER. So, how does he introduce himself? Does he invite her and her mom out to a nice restaurant, to get acquainted in a civilized manner? NO. He says to her, "I'm your Pop. Father dearest. The old sperm shooter." Yes, that's right, that's exactly what he says to his daughter, he calls himself "the old sperm shooter." Then he says "But you can call me Dad! Unless you're a Deadite... then, you can go fuck yourself. So come on now, Demon Spawn! Show Daddy what you got!" as he brandishes his chainsaw. That's just such an absolutely priceless moment. I fucking loved this show. If I ever meet a daughter I never knew I had, I hope I remember to say exactly what Ash says. God bless him... what a truly great man. Here, you can see him say it at about 19:00 in this clip:

Local expressions that have gone global

I don't know how to title this post, and I'm not really sure this is even the section it belongs in, soooo I'm off to a HELL of a great start here.

Anyway, I was just thinking about how online communications has taken some local expressions that were once only used in certain countries, or even just in parts of certain countries, but now can be used by anyone.
For example, I have seen people on Twitter say "y'all" even though I know for sure that they are not from the American South (that's the southeastern US, really, for anyone from other parts of the world reading this).

I have also seen people from the US say "for fuck's sake," or just FFS, although I'm pretty sure that was just a British expression until pretty recently. I think I first heard it in Shaun of the Dead, personally.

Or, how about when people say "legendary," meaning... you know what it means, like historically awesome, sooo amazing that, whatever it is, it instantly attains mythic proportions. I think the first time I heard anyone say that, it was the great Kiwi, Zoe Bell, in Death Proof. You see people from all over say it now, now and then... not daily, but it comes up sometimes. I am guessing that that may have been a Kiwi expression originally, but I'm not even sure.

Or how about saying "wicked" as a synonym for "very." I grew up around Boston, so I have always known a lot of people who use the word in that way, and it just sounds normal to me. But sometimes you see it online, being used by people who I'm pretty sure have never been to Boston. Maybe they picked it up from Boston-based movies, of which there have been plenty since Good Will Hunting.

I bet there are some slang words from Trainspotting that might have caught on, although obviously the internet was in a very primitive stage at that point.

Does anybody have anything interesting that comes to mind, when you think of this general topic?? It could be anything... maybe Scottish or Canadian expressions from Mike Myers movies (Austin Powers, etc, THAT Mike Myers)... or maybe Texas slang that might have caught on because of South by Southwest, or for some other reason.... Anyone?

The Beyond (1981, Fulci)

Could The Beyond have been influenced by Phantasm?!? I know, that sounds a little crazy, but just think about it the next time you watch either movie.

The music often sounds very similar, in both movies. Also, both movies are surreal in a similar way... they don't really make total sense, except when considered as dreams or nightmares. Also, that place where they go at the very end of The Beyond makes me think of how the brothers and Reggie get a glimpse of that other planet, through the tuning fork doorway, in Phantasm. Also, there isn't exactly a tuning fork doorway in The Beyond, but that whole hotel, and maybe even that whole town, was supposed to be a portal to... well, to Hell, not to another planet, but... well, it's still sort of a similar type of deal.

There might be other things too... I read that Fulci and his crew made up a lot of things on the spot, as they were filming The Beyond. I just wonder if any of them had seen Phantasm, when it came out, the year before they did their filming. Maybe their memories of it were part of their creative process, maybe even unconsciously.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Damien: Omen 2

I can't sleep because I can't stop laughing. (Also because I haven't adjusted to setting the clocks forward yet, probably). Anyway, someone at XFinity has a sense of humor. Damien: Omen 2 is on their menu of free movies, and the little caption they gave it says "A couple sends the Antichrist to military school." I'm lying here in the dark, cracking up. What a great description. "Honey, let's send the Antichrist to military school! What could go wrong?" Then, later on, after a shitload of carnage: "Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time."

Anyway, that cracked me up.

It is interesting, by the way, that Omen 2 was clearly trying to send the franchise in the direction of a militaristic Damien fucking up the world via armies and war. Someone must have changed their mind between Omen 2 and Omen 3, because in the third one he wasn't militaristic at all. He was CEO of Thorn Industries, and also some sort of a rather beloved figure on the world stage, if I recall correctly, appointed to run some kind of world youth organization by the United Nations.

Silver Bullet (1985)

I just noticed the poster of the solar system on the wall, in Corey Haim's character's bedroom. I had that exact same poster on my bedroom wall, when I was a kid! I also had a jet-powered super-wheelchair with cool red flames painted on the sides, so that was fun too. (My last statement is significantly less accurate than my first statement). Anyway, you can see the poster when he sits on his bed after crawling through his window, right after getting home after he hits the werewolf in the eye with the firework/rocket thing. Here's the poster:

Spring Break

It feels very weird for me. I haven't been in school-mode in over a decade, but the change hits you. Now that I appreciate the merit of Spring Break again, I hope to watch some great trash for the few weeks.

The challenge has been fun so far. I love the video nasty point. That gets me through hard times. Watched Girls Nite Out for a gore or nudity point, but I don't feel right in counting only blood and no titties. Need to work on them FTVs though!

Since I've got time to waste, I'll be working on a new feature that I think will be a lot of fun. Me and ballz are working out the details, but it's going to be cool. If you guys are on TE this much, I might as well give you more things to do.

Watch the TRVL Channel!!!

You guys, turn your TV or whatever on, and tell it to go to the TRVL (Travel) Channel. It's all paranormal stuff: ghosts, Bigfoot, cryptids, etc. Amazing. I think it used to be an actual channel about travel, but... not anymore.

Hey Guys

Hey guys. How is everyone doing? I hope good. January and February had some fun challneges and games going on. And it got me thinking, maybe we could have some more fun like that. But to do that, I could really use some suggestions on what kind of games you would want to do. Trivia games, guessing games, drafts... And also challneges. We are always looking for new challenge ideas.

Anyway, if you have any ideas, mention them here. I know a lot of yall can and have come up with excellent ideas. Let's make this site more awesome than it already is. Cause @box you have done an excellent job on it. Its fucking amazing.

Have a good day!
