Dead Set (2008) British zombie apocalypse series, set amongst the former cast and tech support of a

..... (title of this post continued): of a Big Brother show.

I have mentioned this before, but it was quite awhile back... probably on IMDB, actually. Anyway, I think they did a good job on this. Some of the people on the Big Brother show come across as total idiots, but most of them eventually show that they do have some semblance of a brain, if they are given a chance to use it. Of course, even if they do use them, most of their brains get eaten eventually anyway, by the hordes of ravenous undead that overrun the show. Damn.

The New Invisible Man

Everybody knows that Universal has been fucking up on their Dark Universe reboot, but that's because they're not even trying. This time around, they decided to give Leigh Whannell a shot, because at this point, what have they got to lose?

Now right off the bat, I can tell you I like Leigh. "Upgrade" was a kickass movie, and this recent effort is also a pretty solid one.

Invisible Man movies are usually about a scientist who takes some sort of drug to become invisible, and while this is partly true for this case, it partly isn't. The best thing to do is shut the fuck up about the specifics and let the viewer go into this deciding if our protagonist is crazy or legit.

There are good special effects and good slow-burn psychological drama. What a mix, huh? Go see it. Or don't. You probably wont, am I right?

Friday - Series Review

In the last 24 hours, I've watched all three of these films, which are quite reputable in blaxploitation and stoner comedy circles. For some reason, I simply never got around to them, but obviously, if I'm binging the trilogy, they must have hooked me at some point or another.

I rank the series in descending order. The first one was pretty amazing as a ghetto California tale of suburban youth. It's fucking funny and it's well written. After that one, they get a bit more gimmicky, but people will eat it up if it features established characters that they all found endearing in the past.

The characters are pretty great. Ice Cube is always annoyed that people and circumstances are getting in the way of his mere existence, but that's typical Ice Cube, right?

Chris Tucker is one that I'm surprised that I missed in the sequels. He never appeared in any sequels because according to imdb trivia, he had become a born-again Christian. Some bullshit, if you ask me. These movies are dirty, but they're not that dirty. Basically no nudity and minimal blood/violence, but he felt this type of movie was beyond him, I guess.

Mike Epps is his scaredy cat replacement, and he has his moments. John Witherspoon plays the dad, and he's always taking stinky shits and that becomes his gag throughout the series. A lot of these characters have gags, because that's what this series becomes after a while. There's always a bully, too. Tiny Lister in the first two is always trying to muscle them out of money, and Terry Crews (who is prison gay in this) wants to oblige his landlord mother to get her rent money.

The scope of the series is pretty interesting. The first movie was on one day in the neighborhood, and the sequel was set a week later, and things quickly went over the top. By the third one, time wasn't essential, and they said, "Fuck it. Let's set this one on a Friday before Christmas."

They were all pretty fun. I got high and drunk as fuck for all of them, and it was worth it. IMDb lists "Last Friday" slated for a 2021 release. Some original cast is listed, but no Chris Tucker.

Thoughts on any of these movies?

Dolemite is My Name - A Trash Epic

While I have heard of Dolemite before, I seemed to forget about it. A lot. It always seemed like a premise with some of the right ideas, but it never quite phased me on how perfect it could end up being. Dolemite is a legitimate Trash Epic about a guy who's got nothing who becomes a cult icon.

I'm glad Eddie Murphy finally went back to being raunchy. He plays it great and I love his arc. He dreams big and works shitty jobs, but then something about him snaps and he becomes something out of nothing.

I also love that this was a real story about a real guy who released albums, did photoshoots, created production companies and made shitty movies, and got his inspiration from bums on the street. If that's not the makings of a trash hero, then I don't know what is.

They really went all out for the time period, though. It feels authentic, and it was such a weird and wonderful time for art and pop culture. Our protagonist Rudy Ray Moore isn't the most convincing leading man, but he somehow convinces his producers that he is, and he gets away with anything and his ego doesn't take no for an answer. Somehow, these companies follow his directives, and the results are pretty shitty.

I followed the movie up with some Black Dynamite, because this is probably the kind of movie Rudy envisioned making. Black Dynamite is a perfect movie. I followed up that movie with the original Dolemite, and the execution leaves something to be desired, but the story behind it sure is wonderful.

National Lampoon's Dirty Movie

This was a hunk of shit about making a bad movie comprised of several skit comedy jokes. Christopher Meloni plays a big-toothed producer who tries to make a great dirty movie with a LOT of bad taste jokes.

With that said, Christopher Meloni is great. I could ramble on about how cool that man is. He's played intimidating characters in shows such as OZ as well as comedic fucks in shows like Netflix's Wet Hot American Summer. Solid actor, and he plays a man without a moral compass here who is adamant on making a movie about tasteless jokes.

National Lampoon is a rather hit-or-miss brand. I love some of their movies like Animal House, Loaded Weapon, and Van Wilder. Probably could stand to watch a few more of their movies, but then comes along this piece of racism propaganda! Funny shit! Watch it if you want some absolute trash.

The Hunt (2020)

Inspired by The Most Dangerous Game and the crazy political environment we have today. We have a movie where twelve "Deplorables" are kidnapped by "Liberal Elites" and are placed in the woods with weapons but heavily disadvantaged as many are quickly and unfairly snuffed in a gory, fun mess. Of course one of the Deplorables turned into a Rambo style badass and plenty of carnage ensues.

The movie have some good dark comedy moments. I find the political satire to fall flat though. I believe they are going for a both sides are wrong slant, but I feel like they tried to play the satire part of this film a little too safe and too far down the middle. This movie was funny with over the top gore and great action. The main character did a great job in making the audience care for the character. The plot twists were simple and easy to catch but still kept the movie interesting. Overall, I enjoyed this and will probably watch it again. It is the kind of movie that entertains people who like watching a bunch of mindless gore.

Confederate States of America (2004)

This was some funny shit. This is a mockumentary about how the confederates won the civil war, and how that difference ripples through history. People still own slaves and a lot of history still happens, only somewhat different.

The narration and presentation is great. This laughable premise is taken seriously as if it were a real history channel documentary, and the best part are the commercials. Every few minutes, we're given a commercial break with some super racist gags.

Sit back and watch some racist commercials:

Misty Brew's Creature Feature

I just discovered this. Does anyone here already know about Misty Brew? Apparently she was sort of an Elvira or Rhonda Shear type of character, on local television in Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky, back in the 80s. She seems more like Elvira than Rhonda Shear, I think... I haven't watched enough of her shows to be sure. Anyway, I am watching her presentation of The Legacy (1978), and she does a pretty good job. Google away, if you want to find out more. No, I'll just post it, here is her Youtube channel:

Corona: Beer and Viruses

This shit about the Corona virus is the absolute hogwash. I have two jobs that are negatively affected by this tripe, and for no good reason.

Job A is a stockboy at the local dollar store. People come in buy more toilet paper than they would need in a month. But truth be told, they're probably buying it because they know everyone else is panic-buying it because they're dumb fucking cunts. Of all things to stockpile on, why does the world think it's going to shit itself unrelentingly over a virus that people seem to be recovering just fine from? I heard Tom Hanks is doing just fine.

Some dude at work was explaining viruses to me and said that my excessive drinking wont kill Corona virus, because the virus itself isn't technically alive. What kind of shit is this? There's only one way to seek the truth in this case, and it's to drink more of @der's whiskey. You know, just to be sure...

Can you believe how far these assholes are going with this? Not only are people buying up every bit of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, and bottled water that we have, but they've complained so much that it's become a movement. Businesses are following in the masses' need for redundant precautions and the result is mind numbing: Businesses are closing down over this virus, and it's crippling the economy. Trump might start paying us all thousands of bucks just because of everyone's ignorance, but you know what? I'll take it. I get the feeling that a lot of the overblown nature of this "pandemic" is just a scheme. A scheme that's backfiring hardcore on the perpetrator, because smart people will see through this bullshit.

Corona Brewery must be writhing in pain from this. There are actually some imbeciles out there who are attributing the beer to the cause of this. I don't know about you, but I like Corona. They're a damn fine beer.

America is acting really stupid right now. Anyone want to weigh in on this Corona crap?

The Loves of Count Iorga

Around 15 years ago, MGM had their Midnite Movies catalogue in full swing, with 60s to 70s (and sometimes 80s) classics brought to home video, finally. My mom bought one of her old favorites, "Count Yorga, Vampire" on VHS, and I had to see what the big deal was. Was it a big deal, though? Really?

Count Yorga... Vampire! AKA "The Loves of Count Iorga", originally conceived to be a porno, but toned down by the actor's request in favor of making it more legit. At least there's still implied lesbian sex in the film.

The movie plays out like your average vampire-in-the-real-world story does. Vampiric shit happens, nobody believes it, until there's nothing left to salvage. It's a modern-day take on the old story, but it works because the characters go along with it, and always doubt that this kind of thing could be real.

Robert Quarry is fantastic as the Count, playing the role as both charming AND annoyed. This dude is stuck-up and snooty as shit, but his look and mannerisms are perfect. He's even got a big brute for a familiar, played by the hideous Edward Walsh. The mythology and cliches are strong in this movie, and the moody music makes it a definitive vampire tale.

youtube

There is a sequel, which barely has a reason to exist, but it also exists on a high note. It looks almost like a Hammer movie, set in a gothic mansion with even more crucifixes in your face. It's kind of like a rip-off, but in many ways, an equal to the original (even going as far as to feature certain cast members in near identical roles).

I think Yorga is the coolest.
