The Shining
The Shining is getting a new 4k re-release this October, so I went to watch it in theaters (again) to prepare for the upcoming "Doctor Sleep". What's funny is that this theatrical endeavor was totally cropped to make it widescreen. You could tell because of the end credits were cut off. For a cinematic legend, it's funny that Kubrick made a bunch of his movies in the 4:3 aspect ratio, but we'll forgive him.
For starters, I think this movie is great. A horror classic exceptional for its brooding atmosphere. The pacing may be slow to some people, but I think the tension and buildup is slow-burn perfection. The music sets the moody tone and there are certain cues that give me goosebumps. Still.
This may be the ultimate madness movie. Jack Nicholson was born to be an axe-wielding maniac, and I wish he'd play a psychopath more often.
"You didn't let me finish my sentence! I said I'm not gonna hurt you... I'm just gonna bash your brains in! I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in!"
Stephen King is a fool for hating this movie. What's his beef with it anyway? Because it deviated from the book? As great as he is, he can be a real idiot some times. Especially when he gets political, but we'll forgive him.
One thing I noticed is that this one has a few similarities to Pet Sematary. The main one is the indian burial ground bit, but there's also the ghosts, as well as a character being warned to return somewhere and flying on a plane and taking a trip to get back to a place, only to meet a gruesome end. Plus, child protagonists who are psychic, to boot...
Some of the scenes in this movie are downright creepy, though. You can probably count those scenes on one hand, but when they hit, they hit hard. The nasty old hag? The twin girls? The bit that creeps me out most is the damn animal-suit blowing the fancy man. Random and creepy shit, right there...
What are your thoughts on The Shining? Worthy? Overrated? Is King justified in his hate? Or is it a horror masterpiece?

Best Titles for Cop Movies?
Anyone have any favorites? This certainly qualifies as a Trash Epics topic.
I am sitting here watching Timecop right now, which I have always liked. Timecop isn't a particularly awesome title, but YEESH that damned Trash Epics spider just crawled past my hand...
Anyway, Jean-Claude Van Damme movies had some decent titles, suitable for saying in the profoundly pissed-off voice of whoever did the voiceover for all the trailers for those movies, which were on VHS cassettes and DVDs for many years. Here, listen to this, especially after about the halfway point in the trailer:

Some good JC Van Damme titles included Death Warrant, Bloodsport, No Retreat No Surrender, Hard Target... also, Steven Seagal movies had some pretty great titles for awhile, around that same time, like Above the Law, Under Siege, Out for Justice, Marked for Death... I am a pretty big fan of the title Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence. Many Charles Bronson movies had great titles, and Clint Eastwood of course... anyone have any favorites?

Is anyone else getting excited for October?
Is anyone else getting stoked for October yet? Does anyone have an idea of what they what to watch? Do you have anything saved for it?
I know there is still two weeks or so to the kick-off of The October Challenge, and I know that there is a challenge underway, but I am starting to look forward to this years challenge. It is not just the challenge - I like this time of year, when the evenings are shorter. Leaves are falling and Autumn is calling. It is good for TrashEpics too, a sharp increase in activity is inevitable - hopefully activity will be prolonged.
Anyway, I usually put movies aside especially for it. Movies that I haven't had a chance to watch, or movies that I keep putting off, for one reason or another. I already know what I will be watching this year as it saves from rushed choices and ultimate disappointment. I have a nice mixture of foreign, to obscure and hyped horror lined up. It allows gives me the opportunity to explore some directors filmography that I may have not seen to others in which I am concluding their filmography, to watching some Asian horror movies I have not seen before. I usually don't bother with re-watches - I usually just watch first-time-views instead. Anyway here is my list for anyone interested:

Rambo's back, and he's pissed!
It's been 11 years since Rambo came home, but he's finally found peace in Arizona where he was born and raised. He lives a calm life on his father's ranch where he has a surrogate family. When Gabrielle (who refers to him as Uncle John) wants to find her sleazeball father in Mexico, John advises against it, but he can't change her mind. From then on, he knows he's only going to run into trouble.
Last Blood is the supposed final chapter in this near 40 year saga, taking Rambo out of the conventional war zone and into a more domestic setting, fueled by criminal human trafficking and John's most personal revenge to date.
Rambo V is easily the most violent entry of the series. You've never seen Rambo this angry before. He tortures people, he mortally wounds them, and he overkills them. It's so very satisfying to watch horrible things happen to horrible people, and if you give Stallone a hammer, he'll put it to good use.
The good thing about going up against a cartel type is that there are lots of them. Rambo will find all sorts of ways to dispose of the enemy, and there's no shortage of blood and brain matter in this movie. The only thing this movie is short on is runtime, which leaves out the filler and leaves you with only the initial exposition and proper motivation for John Rambo to let loose and do what he does best.
Now, this movie might pull your heart strings a bit, but if you go in expecting some deep storytelling, you're in the wrong place. If you want a solid little revenge flick, Last Blood is where it's at.

Iron Maiden - The Legacy of the Beast Tour
Last night, I'd gotten to see one of my favorite bands ever with @der. Back when I was just getting into music over a decade ago, Iron Maiden was my first big musical obsession. I'd between them, Alice Cooper, and The Rolling Stones, I'd say Maiden was my favorite back in the day, and never did I think I'd be able to see a band as big as they are live in concert, but they came to Dallas, and wham! What a night!
First off, you know you're in the right place when half the audience is wearing a Maiden shirt. I had my Run to the Hills shirt on because I didn't want to be a loser.
The show was supposed to start at 7:30, but instead of the headliners, we had some shitty opening act called "The Raven Age" who represents the most generic sound a metal band of these days can produce. I zoned right the fuck out during their whole half-hour on stage. They killed our buzz, so me and der needed to get more over-priced beers in our system before we could get enjoy what we actually came to see. GOOD metal.
The setlist represented their "legacy" tracks, omitting their less than par new stuff from the last albums. Thank God there was no "Final Frontier" tracks on this, cuz that album blows:
Aces High
Where Eagles Dare
2 Minutes to Midnight
The Clansman
The Trooper
Revelations
For the Greater Good of God
The Wicker Man
Sign of the Cross
Flight of Icarus
Fear of the Dark
The Number of the Beast
Iron Maiden
The Evil that Men Do
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Run to the Hills
As expected, Bruce Dickinson was running up and down the stage the entire time, changing outfits every few songs to fit the theme, and he specifically mentioned that they were only playing older tracks, because "we're fucking old." It wasn't until The Trooper that Eddie came on stage and Bruce started sword fighting him. A few songs later, Bruce donned a flamethrower and shot fire everywhere. What a guy.
One thing to note is that all the key players looked basically exactly the same as when I started listening to them a dozen years ago. Except for Jannick. He looked old as dirt, trying to counter that by showboating and running around doing his guitar spin around his body and running in circles tangling up his cord. I like to make fun of Jannick because no band needs 3 guitarists.
Adrian Smith got himself sucked into the music and didn't run around much. That's what Jannick is for. Dave Murray had some great moments to shine with his playing, and Steve Harris looked intense and bad-ass the whole time like he always does, playing some of the best damn bass you'll ever hear.
Nicko McBrain was laughing the entire time and having a ball, and he was the last one off the stage because he was having too much fun with it.
Those guys know how to put on one hell of a show.

Your Top 10 horror movies of the 1990's?
Okay, I know the 1990's are not particularly looked upon with great fondness by most horror fans, but personally, while not the best, I feel it was an underated decade.
@jimb14red posted an informative thread about his views on the decade a while back.
"90's Horror: An underrated decade" - https://trashepics.com/post/102/4/
My Top 10 would look like this: (a word to the wise - a lot of obscure stuff here and may not be to everyones taste)
