So what you want to know?

Not really my intention to re-join but Box enabled my account again and is wanting some explanation from me. Since my account was disabled I could not explain anything. I did get a message yesterday where Vincent tried to lure Troma back in so therefore I checked the shoutbox. Between that and now I actually rarely checked. If the mods can check the activity of my ip they will know that's true.

I will answer your questions as long as you don't start throwing insults. I won't answer any questions about Onyx or Tromafreak. Any insinuations that they would have been manipulating me I won't answer as they are not true.

The Ultimate Horror Movie Guide by James Marriott & Kim Newman

image

I bought The Ultimate Horror Movie Guide by James Marriott & Kim Newman a couple of weeks back.

It is the most informative book out there on the horror genre. It has all the most influential to the most obscure movies. It is basically one big encyclopedia - decade by decade critical analysis to all of the sub-genres out there. A well written, thoughtful and highly entertaining read, that really pushes this into the "must have" category for all horror fans.

Us '19 vs Twin Peaks

Back when Jordan Peele tried to awe us with his new doppleganger flick, in the back of my mind, I kept thinking about how Twin Peaks had already covered a lot of the same ground. This was way back in the damn early 90s, too. Not only regarding the dopplegangers, but also that whole alternate dimension of sorts that they come from. But wait, there's more! SPOILERS AHEAD.

So if you've seen "US", you know there was a twist ending. Not a very unexpected twist, but it was an okay switcheroo they pulled on us on how the dopple escaped, trapped the original one, and started a family of her own. Of course, this was also something that TP did.

So in rewatching TP season 3, Audrey Horne's plot started to confuse to hell out of me again. Eventually, it all came back to me, especially regarding her demon seed Richard Horne, who turns out to be the son of dopple Cooper.

Did Jordan Peele watch Twin Peaks? Was his idea of originality simply changing the ethnicity of the characters?

Despite being an oscar winner for it, Jordan Peele isn't very original, is he? His first "original screenplay" winner is a copy of Stepford Wives and The Skeleton Key, his next big deal has strong parallels to a tv show from the fucking 90s, and his latest effort is the 3rd remake of the Twilight Zone, and not even the first time it was hosted by a black guy.

Again, I think JP is alright, but it's funny how he thinks he's breaking new ground.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

I finally got the chance to watch this movie Saturday evening after work. I was thrilled to watch it! It brought back my childhood of when I would read it with friends and get spooked out by the stories! Even now I still own all of the books!

Anyways, I was super excited to see this book come to life! Unfortunately it was just plain meh. It started off really slow, and me personally I don't like slow movies. I was already bored within the first 30 mins, but it was a free movie so why not just go ahead and finish it? I wasn't aware that this movie was set back some years. I must've not really paid attention to that in the trailer, but that wasn't a huge deal to me. I wanted there to be more stories involved! I straight up just wanted MORE!

I was also disappointed that it was rated PG-13. I wish it would've been rated R for the people who grew up reading this book could see a little more horror in it.

It was an okay movie, definitely not one of my favorites.

Jump Scares

What is your opinion on them?

The topic of jump scares is always intriguing. Some think they are hacky and some think they are entertaining. I feel like its kind of a staple of modern horror films, and at a point they almost stop being scary and start becoming predictable. With that being said, I really enjoy a lot of movies that are heavily reliant on jump scares, but the more I watch these new horror movies, the more it seems forced. Its almost as if they have some sort of jump scare quota that they have to meet. Do you guys think these jump scares add anything to movies, aside from being really loud, abrupt noises with the intent on...well...making people jump?

Ready or Not

This movie was uneven but had its moments. There was a lot of attempts at some dark humor. Sometimes it worked and other times it didn't. I couldn't decide who I really wanted to win in this one. The bride was somewhat likeable and the family was so stupid and inept but I like watching people sacrificed to Satan. The best laughs came at the end.

Overall, pretty much what you get in modern day horror. Paint by numbers with decent writing and some good gore. The only they that made me cringe a little was the complete ineptness of the family, but that was done for humor's sake.

Books adapted for the screen

So lately I have been thinking about books that were made into movies or tv shows. And there are a few that I wish were never made, or should have been a tv show, or a tv show that maybe should have been a movie. I hate the Eragon movie, they completely messed it up. It was such a good book, and they could have done so much better. Another series that I think would have been way better as a tv show is Vampire Academy. The books are dark, and the movie was made into a comedy, and they completely missed the entire feel of the book.
Are there any books you wished were never adapted, or any that you wish was a tv show or vice versa? And I guess on the opposite side of thing are there any movies that fit perfectly with the book? I would love to hear y'alls thoughts!

Fast & Furious IX - The First Spin-Off

Or maybe the tires are spinning off of this franchise, because it's gotten pretty far out there. They have a trailer out for "Hobbs and Shaw" now and I just watched it. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, once enemies after the fact that Statham killed a shit-ton of federal agents in Part 7, but that's water under the bridge, right? Now, they're the reluctant partners who have to save the world from Idris Elba, but wait! There's more!

This one apparently features bio-enhanced villains, so yeah... it's straight up sci-fi now. From street racing to this, huh? I'll probably watch it though. I got nothing better to do with my life.

Watch it if you want:

Future-Kill (1985)

After 20+ years of putting it off, I finally watched Future-Kill. This is one of those movies I saw at the video store all the time and kept passing on; its HG Giger cover art and the tagline about it reuniting the stars of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre making a strong enough impression to stay with me all these years. I honestly can't even recall the film being brought up even once on imdb weirdly enough.

The plotline is basically a rip off of The Warriors - a group of Frat boys go into a dilapidated inner-city inhabited by new wave rejects who are supposed to be a violence-free group of individuals opposing the use of nuclear weapons - but when one bad apple named Splatter (played by The Hitchhiker from TCM) kills the leader of the resistance and blames it on the Frat Boys, well....all hell breaks loose....and the Frats, who, like The Warriors, not only have to stay alive and figure out a way home, also happen to be pretty damn good fighters.

Enjoyable stuff. Splatter is an awesome villain, clearly inspired by Wez from The Road Warrior except with more armor and razor sharp fingernails. The cinematography is that typically murky mid-80s look that you expect, particularly because the events of the film take place overnight, although there are splashes of neon to spice things up. Also it's worth mentioning that the beginning takes its cue from Porky's with shenanigans in a frathouse, so that's yet another popular movie Future-Kill is referencing.

It could have used more gore but that's a minor grievance as it's fast-paced and never dull. The movie even takes an extended break in a punk club that gives us a glimpse as to how the resistance spends their downtime:

Oh yeah, Marilyn Burns (Sally from TCM) is in it as well, but with a very small role and looking nearly unrecognizable. I mean, the tagline certainly wasn't lying, but it ain't like anybody would ever know otherwise.
