Salem's Lot (2024)

Anybody have any strong opinions about this? I finally saw it last night.

It wasn't as good as I had hoped it might be, but it had some redeeming moments. I didn't hate it.

It started off sticking pretty close to the book and the 1979 film, but it took more and more liberties as it went along. That whole scene at the drive-in, towards the end.... um, WHAT?!?!?

Mark Petrie could be black, of course. Why not. I had no problem with that. I did feel a little sorry that they didn't stick with the 1930s and 40s horror movie posters that Mark had on his wall in the 1979 miniseries. That showed something important about the state of horror movies all the way through the 1970s, IMHO. The classic Universal monsters were still emblematic of horror, they were still the "main monsters" that any self-respecting kid had to know about, all the way through the 70s. Leatherface and Michael Myers were part of poular consciousness, but I think they were still seen as flukes at that point. By the mid-80s, of course, MM, Jason, and Freddy were the real triumvirate of horror. But... whatever, this is all kind of tangential, I just wish they kept the 30s and 40s horror movie posters.

They changed some things about Sue Norton and Matt Burke. I don't want to talk too much about that. I think I prefer the 1979 miniseries, in some ways, when it came to Matt B, especially. But, I guuess I can still respect what the 2024 version does... by making relatively small changes, at least they keep the audience on our toes! If we don't know quite what to expect, we will be surprised more, etc. That's cool.

Barlow was still sort of a Nosferatu clone, but done with more CGI, I think? At least facially? I'm not 100% sure I'm right about that.

Sue Norton was a babe, soooo that's good! She was also... more cool? More cool than in the 1979 version? I mean, at least in the sense that she was very quickly persuaded that they faced vampires, whereas she waffled a lot more in the book, and in the 1979 miniseries.

The 70s background stuff was decent, overall. The clothes, hair, music, cars, Red Sox references, etc all felt about right, for the period.

They kind of merged some stuff that happened at the Marsten house with stuff that was supposed to happen at Eva Miller's boarding house. I guess that makes some sense. I can respect it. It just makes the story move a little more quickly.

Spencer Treat Clark did a very solid job as Mike Ryerson! I thought they did good stuff with that character. They made his scary silvery vampire eyes a lot more subtle, at some points, which I thought added a lot to his spookiness. I thought he was one of the high points of this adaptation.

Basically, I didn't love it, but I wouldn't say I hated it either. I'm not saying it was meh... I will take anything related to Salem's Lot, just hit me with whatever you've got, I'm all over it. So, I'm pre-inclined to find good things to say about it. But, it really did have some good moments, so... yah.

Anybody have any strong opinions about this movie??

The Anti-Turkey Challenge Discussion thread

So a brand new challenge to get us off to a good start to the New Year. Using IMDb, the idea is is to watch as many movies as you can rated 7.0+. For some of you trash lovers, this could be your worst nightmare but isn't that the idea of a challenge.

1. Scoring:
8.9+ = 6 points
8.6-8.8 = 5 points
8.3-8.5 = 4 points
8.0-8.2 = 3 points
7.5-7.9 = 2 points
7.0-7.4 = 1 point

2. FTV = 1 point

3. Can be any genre.

4. Trifectas: franchises and directors only. A movie can only count towards one trifecta. For example, the "Dark Knight" or Lord of the Rings trilogy can be either director or franchise but not both.

Single trifecta: 5 points
Double trifecta: 7 points
Triple trifecta: 9 points
Etc.

5. Movies with a rating of 6.9 or under do not count.

6. Must be at least one hour long.

7. Starts 00:00 1st January and ends 23:59 31st January in your respective time zones

So come on people, get watching some of those classics or to some, overrated movies!

The Guest (2014)

I haven't seen this movie in a while, but Netflix just got it back apparently, so I was quick to jump right on it and give it another viewing. If I had to describe this movie in one word, I guess my word would be... "awesome".

The title gives way to the premise in that a family had lost one of their own named Caleb who died in a military mishap. Then suddenly, his best pal David Collins (yeah, that's the name of a Dark Shadows character alright) comes by to relay Caleb's love for his family, and he quickly warms his way into their hearts. What follows is a heartwarming story of grieving family learning to cope with the loss of a loved one with the next best thing. Dan Stevens as the titular character!

Now this dude is charming. Charming as fuck! He's sly, he's sexy, and he's everybody's best friend. This can only mean one thing. Is he too good to be true? Watch this movie and find out for yourself, fuckers!

The director's intent was to homage Halloween and Terminator, and he does just that. The vibes are excessive, and some of the music cues seem straight out of Halloween III (as do the Silver Shamrock masks!).

Of course, this movie is also really sad. It's sad because it was directed by Adam Wingard, who started off with some real shit and started to finally prove his worth as a force to be reckoned with... but this must have been his peak, because he went downhill right after this with shit like Blair Witch and Death Note. Now, he's working on stupid shit like Godzilla vs King Kong and a remake of I Saw the Devil. Dude should have quit while he was ahead.

The other sad part of this equation is whatever happened to Maika Monroe? She had a wonderful year in 2014 with this movie and "It Follows", then she fell into some Hollywood shit called "The Fifth Wave" and I haven't heard of her since. She could have been somebody if she chose her roles more carefully...

But as it stands, "The Guest" is cool as fuck, and I love it. It has some good music, characters, violence, and it even has an ahab. That's right, Lance Reddick plays a Dr. Loomis character in it, furthering that whole Halloween vibe. This movie is the tits.

Best and Worst of 2024

Hey bumchums. I'm trying to rack my booze-addled brain for all the 2024 flicks I've seen. Would love to hear your thoughts on what's worth seeing because it's good and what's worth seeing because it isn't. It would also be cool if heated arguments broke out over what's good and what isn't.

Good

Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul

November 15th on Netflix.

I've been waiting a long time for this. I want to see Mike annihilate Jake. Jake loses either way, beating up an old guy or getting beat up by an old guy.

Dylan's New Nightmare (2023)

A Freddy fan film featuring Miko Hughes reprising his role as Dylan Porter, son of the late SFX guru Chase Porter and institutionalized horror actress Heather Langenkamp.

First off, the video begins with a disclaimer that it contains suicidal content, which it doesn't. The production itself is pretty professional, so I knew I could end up watching the whole thing.

Miko Hughes is a short dude. He's also got a beard now and he's a bit more jacked. I met him at a con a few years back and he said acting wasn't really his thing after his few childhood flicks, but he's certainly fine at it. In fact, the character is trying to audition for a role in Hatchet 5 in this short film.

Freddy does appear, and it ain't Englund, but it's not bad either. A pretty gross and creepy look to Freddy here, opting to look closer to traditional Freddy rather than the New Nightmare version.

Overall, it's a decent effort, though it just kinda... ends. Then of its 35 minute runtime, 8 minutes of that are end credits. Don't you just hate that?

Late Night with the Devil

Have there been any threads about this? I saw it last night, largely because... because... God forgive me... because Ariana Grande recommended it, in that clip I posted last night in the shout box. OK, I realize that I just lost all respect and street credit from everybody reading this, but just... just... just... I got nothing.

Having said that: I watched it last night, and it was interesting, in a demented way. I am waffling on what my final interpretation of it is. There are two possibilities, or perhaps some combination of the two. I won't say more than that right now, partly to avoid spoilers and partly because it is time for me to get the hell out of my apartment for the day.

Anyway... worth a watch, IMAAAGHP. (In my and also Ariana Grande's humble opinion).
