The Rambo series!

What's everyone's thoughts on John Rambo, and the Sylvester Stallone series based on a novel character who originally wasn't supposed to survive the first movie? I hardly think that's a spoiler, considering we're getting Rambo V, tentatively subtitled "Last Blood" as an homage to the original title, which in nowhere had the word "Rambo" in it. Hell, the whole series has a funny way of naming things:

First Blood (1982) - They drew first blood. Okay.
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) - Second blood? A recent film that reminds me of this confusion is "The Last Exorcism: Part II".
Rambo III (1988) - They knew this was all about Stallone at this point, and ran with it. He was huge in the 80s, so why not?
Rambo (2008) - Is this a prequel? Nope. It's part 4.

The new one isn't titled yet, but it very well might be Rambo V: Last Blood. Stallone seems to be feeling a bit old these days, because he recently said the character of Rocky Balboa is done, and shortly after that, Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Creed) in response said he thinks Stallone will be back. Fuck, I sure hope so. Stallone is the man, and Creed II was soooooo good, we need more sequels. After all, Rocky had 5 sequels, and they're all great. Even the bad one (5).

So in First Blood, Stallone is a Vietnam vet who just wants to see his war buddies under better circumstances, but fuck... they're all dead. So he's bummed out, but the local law enforcement is giving him a hard time. They push him. Then, they push him some more. He served his country for these bastards, and this is how they treat him? And then... they draw... First Blood.

It's a really fuckin' good action movie. Pretty tense, too. He's a man trying to lose the enemy in the wilderness, but this shit exacerbates into something wonderful. A franchise.

First Blood Part II was co-written by James Cameron. Fun fact. It doesn't do much for me, but it's probably how most people view the character of John Rambo, though. He's given an out for his prison sentence if he does some mission in his old stomping grounds, Viet-fucking-nam, and then... it's 80s action stuff. Okay at best.

I'm more fond of Hot Shots Part Deux, which features 3-time Rambo actor Richard Crenna playing a parody of his same damn character. Funny shit.

Rambo III, which drops the "First Blood" moniker, is along the same lines of part 2, but I like it a bit more. Rambo is set on a mission to Afghanistan for some reason or another, but this time... well... there's nothing new here. I just think it's a little bit of a cooler movie.

Fun little anecdote: In Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), Chop-Top listens to the butchering evidence tape relevant to that plot, and in hearing all the violence, he asks, "What's that? The Rambo III soundtrack?". He knew what was up.

Oh shit...

Nothing for 20 years, huh? Rambo deserves better than to be in the 90s anyway. So in 2008, we get the new one, just titled Rambo. Stallone is getting up in age, but fuck it. He just did another boxing bout in Rocky Balboa (2006) after not having fought in Rocky V (1990), and people loved it. People like me will eat this shit up. He's still got it, so he wanted to give another one of his iconic characters a second chance, because face it... Not many actors have an iconic character play, let alone two. So Stallone got jacked, went to Berma, and massacred some fucking villains, because that's what he does.

Part 4 was easily the most violent of the bunch. Raw and brutal Rambo action, and we all fucking loved it. There's not much to analyze in the movie, because it is just an outlet for action and violence. The exploitation fan in me loves that, and I love that Stallone could come back to that so seemlessly. That's why I'm excited for the new Rambo movie, too.

We haven't seen Stallone in action in a while, because he is getting old. He's 70 something, and to most people, it just isn't plausible that someone can be that old and that bad-ass, but fuck it. I wouldn't want to fight Stallone. I'm still a scrawny piece of shit compared to that guy, and while he (reasonably) didn't fight in Creed II, we're all pretty much in agreement that we'll see him kick some serious ass in Rambo V.

Liverleaf (2018, Japan) - pretty entertaining stuff

Liverleaf (2018) (Japanese Horror)

This is about a relatively small group of students in a school that will be closed after they graduate in a few months. There is rampant bullying on premises. As a viewer, you just know something bad is going to happen . . . and it does. After that pivotal event, there are violent repercussions. This film has certain similarities to Japanese exploitation films from the 1990s, but it distinguishes itself by playing with its tone. This creates acts of violence that range from disturbing to blackly humorous. The film also does a good job of establishing a sense of unease during the quieter moments. The entire film is set during the snowy months, which adds quite a bit to the atmosphere because the color white is accentuated. And of course, the redness of blood is more pronounced by the constant presence of white snow. Another good one from director Eisuke Naito, who previously directed "Puzzle" and "Let's Make the Teacher Have a Miscarriage Club." Recommended

I thought about making this thread a sticky emoticon, but I don't know..and thought about limiting it to Horror, but that would exclude some great trashy exploitation B and Z grade gems. I'll start off with two of my favorites.

Big Ronnie: Portrait Of A Greasy Strangler

image

Everyone knows the best type of bad movie is a weird one, right? Well, it is. Every decade has that really, really weird one that stands out and refuses to leave your brain, even if you'd prefer it had never entered to begin with. More recently, the new millennium has given us the gift that quite literally keeps on giving. That's right, The Room. However, most recently, as of 2016, The Room finally has to move on over for the new weird kid in town. I think it's time we discuss The Greasy Strangler. Or at least attempt to. Yeah. These weird ones aren't getting any easier to tackle. But hey. I'm just happy that there are still directors out there trying to one up each other in the way of weirdness. I may be living in a never ending pipe dream, but I must make sense out of them. So, here goes one more...

image So, no mystery, no spoilers. The Greasy Strangler is an old man we call Big Ronnie. I take it this old man isn't quite as old as he looks. My guess is he got a bit too much sun over the years. Big Ronnie has some type of condition we never learn a single thing about, but can only assume it's of the "Jekyll And Hyde" nature. By day, Ronnie eats as greasily as possible, and by night, one hell of an ugly grease monster must prowl the streets and kill. Only the car wash can bring big Ronnie back.

image I don't know. Maybe it's more of a Werewolf type deal. When big Ronnie isn't the Greasy Strangler, He is is a foul-mouthed old bastard who looks like Doc Brown's dishonest older brother with sweet hair. Ronnie loves to dress in pink almost as much as he loves to stretch the truth, and is more or less a deadbeat. Big Brayden is Ronnie's awkward, but more approachable son. Ronnie and Brayden live and work together, always dressed in pink, but usually walking around in nothing but banana hammocks at home. For work, the duo run a half-assed walking Disco tour that is mostly built on bullshit. I suppose one could say Ronnie and Brayden are bullshit artists.

image Well, Ronnie is the bullshit artist. Brayden probably couldn't find his own ass without some fatherly advice. One day, luck strikes Brayden's life during a tour as he meets a woman who actually seems interested in him. Something Brayden probably never would have expected to happen. Ronnie just flat out doesn't buy it. As unsupportive and discouraging as he can be, Ronnie insists Janet won't ever care about big Brayden. It almost sounds like wishful thinking. If I didn't know better, I'd think Big Ronnie feels threatened by the idea of his son's attention being divided. He's just too proud to admit it. This isn't the only thing big Ronnie is too proud to admit.

image Instead of admitting his fears of being forgotten, big Ronnie steals his son's new girlfriend right out from under him. Then, after claiming he wouldn't, Ronnie fucks the shit out of her. However not before she pops big Brayden's cherry and gets him to play with her asshole, which probably makes this betrayal all the more devastating. But hey. At least Brayden got some. You would think big Ronnie would be satisfied with his proven dominance over his boy, but, for some reason, Ronnie and Janet both now feel the need to taunt big Brayden mercilessly. This completely random sub-plot goes on until it doesn't. And just like that, Brayden and Janet get back together. This makes big Ronnie sad.

image The next move is up to big Ronnie. Will this devious old codger be a smoothee and pry Janet away from his son again, or will he simply shrug it off and get greasy? Hard to do since big Brayden is cross with him. Ronnie needs his son to feed him greasy bacon and hot dogs so he can maintain his greasiness. Things get even more complicated after big Brayden suspects the old man of being the infamous strangler, and makes it clear he will stop at nothing until the mystery is solved. One thing is for sure, though. Whatever big Ronnie does next, he'll have his dick out whilst doing it.

No, seriously. That happened. All of it! It all may sound a little hard to swallow. I suppose that would be the intent. That and, of course, to repulse and disgust, which you may or may not have gathered. However, there is something quite surreal about this film, which is what ultimately makes it special. Otherwise, it would be just another dumb, grossout comedy. One thing that also sticks out is a tone of self-aware lameness that might remind one of Napoleon Dynamite. Add a dash of Farrelly Brothers and probably Troma, and you have one hell of a cinematic enigma!

image

This creepy old actor who played big Ronnie stole the show. Aside from his striking resemblance to Christpher Lloyd's greatest character, this guy also looks a little like Kenny Hotz in old man makeup. Plus, he always looks like he knows something you don't. And as for big Brayden. Well, words can't even do him justice. He is what he is, and he makes this movie what it is every bit as much the old man. Oh, and that woman! The only woman in the movie, come to think of it. Hell, she's probably not too bad looking underneath all that girth. It does seem like the actress had a lot fun with this whole thing. That's pretty cool. You never really know what her character is thinking, and are left to assume she's the biggest bullshit artist of all. There's a serious lack of communication between all characters. Actually, there's not a whole lot of character development either. A quality which is probably on purpose, going by everything else. We don't need to get to know anyone on a normal level. Trust me. We learn more than enough about these people, and about Ronnie's... problem/curse/hobby, or whatever the hell that was. 8/10

December challenge: Foreign/subtitled movies.

Onyx informs me that she hasn't got a challenge lined up for this December, and whilst it also used to be the month for some extreme horror viewing, I thought it might be a good idea to try something different this time (and subsequently host my first challenge). The idea came from Troma's "disliking" of watching movies with subtitles. What could be more of a challenge for someone like Troma than a month of.. viewing movies with subtitles ๐Ÿ˜„ - you could say that, it's the ULTIMATE challenge emoticon.

So the main rule is: Movies cannot be either in the English language or your native tongue if English isn't your first language (I think only Johan applies here?). So American movies like The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto or A Girl Walked Home Alone At Night would still count but if you speak fluent French and you watch a French movie, it will not count. If you understand a bit of Japanese but still require the assistance of subtitles, then of course it still counts.

Like the Fantasy/Sci-Fi challenge, points will be based on running time.

Movies watched can be any genre.

I know December can be a busy month for some of us but if anyone is up for this, let me know below so I can get an idea of interest and if it's worth doing it..

Turkey Challenge 2018 - Proposed Rules

Please look and see what you think. Two big changes proposed are the sex toy bonus and half credit for shows or movies between 25 and 44 minutes.

1) Still use IMDb ratings.

1.0 = 6 points.
1.1-1.9 = 5 points.
2.0-2.9 = 4 points.
3.0-3.9 = 3 points.
4.0-4.4 = 2 points.
4.5-4.9 = 1 point.

2) First time view = 1 point.

3) Can be any genre.

4) Trifectas. Yes. Director actors, and series. For director and actors you can bunch siblings and parent / children or grandparent / grandchildren.

5) A movie can only count towards one trifecta.

Single Trifecta - 5 points

Double Trifecta - 7 points

Triple Trifecta - 9 points

Etc.

6) 2 bonus points for sex toys in movie (dildos, sex dolls, vibrators, etc). Only one 2 point bonus per movie. Handcuffs will only count if they are used as a sex toy as opposed to being used by the police.

7) Movies with 5.0 ratings or better don't count for any points.

8) Must be at least 45 minutes long for full credit. Half credit for films between 25 and 44 minutes.

9) Start - 12:01 AM on November 1.
End - You must start you last movie prior to November 30 11:59 PM.
