July Challenges

We need something fun for this month, so I want to solidify these few challenges:

Camp Slashers - July 8th through July 14th (or July 21st?)

Obviously, we want to do this one while we have a Friday the 13th in the week, because it makes perfect sense. It doesn't particularly need to be set during the summer, and that should open up our options. How about 1 pt for any camp slasher, +1 pt for FTVs, and +1 point for each F13 movie watched ON Friday the 13th. Suggestions welcome.

Current Point Setup:

+1 pt per camp slasher watched
+1 pt per FTV
+1 pt per victim (killed by the killer, ie not accidentally)
+1 pt for each F13 movie watched on F13

Shark Week - July 22nd through July 28th

This is just because Discovery channel's actual shark week is set during this same time, so it makes sense. Anything with a shark ought to count. Not sure how to score this one, be it by runtime or by whether the movie has mutated sharks, points per victim, etc (like @ballz suggested). Got a couple weeks to figure that out.

Current Point Setup:

+1 point per shark movie watched
+1 point per FTV
+1 point per victim (killed BY a shark)

And as you can see, this leaves us with a week inbetween the two. We can leave it empty to relax, or if anyone has a challenge to fill the gap of July 15th-21st, let us know. Hell, maybe we can extend the camp slasher challenge to 2 weeks, if people are into it.

Let us know your thoughts.

Shot-On-Shiteo: Bad Publicity

image

The Holy Grail of 80's SOV directors is certainly a short one. Short but definitive, just the same. You got your Polonia twins, who stuck around far longer than anyone would have probably thought. You have Mr. Chester N. Turner, who, unless you've been living under a rock for 34 years, is known for giving us all the gift that is Black Devil Doll From Hell. And then, last but far from least, there's good 'ol Donald Farmer. Donald Farmer is responsible for such barely legit works of art as Cannibal Hookers, Demon Queen, and countless others he's churned out since this era that I have yet to explore. One, however, sticks out in my head above others. Today, I'd like to say a few words about a movie called Scream Dream. One of Farmer's first, barely missing the SOV boom, but providing for us the one thing we were always too blind to realize we needed: A Rocktober Blood for the SOV market!

image Michelle Shock is on top of the world. She's in the hottest Heavy Metal band on the planet, and being the late 80's, this earns her title of 'The Queen of Rock". Michelle's fame and infamy is only inflated by recent rumors of Devil worship. Rumors which are very much confirmed to us, the audience, when some dumb shit ditches his girlfriend for the radder Michelle. Michelle sucks on his weiner in return, after the show, only to bite it off. We're not sure this is actual proof of Satanism, or that Michelle always likes to do that, but it does prove she's kind of an asshole, right?

image Yes, she is. Michelle Shock is kind of an asshole. I believe said quality is ultimately what did her in. Michelle's manager, Lou Sharkey, might have been able to overlook all the bad publicity and media outrage surrounding these Satanic rumors, as well as cases of fan disappearances after shows. However Michelle has proven herself to be more trouble than she's worth. So, the queen of rock is officially gone. Luckily for Sharkey, he already has a new girl lined up as a replacement. Jamie Summers has a hell of a voice and is certainly better at being Michelle Shock than Michelle is. Not only that, but she's not an asshole, nor is she into any of that other crazy shit.

image So, all is good, but the rest of the band still wanted to pay Michelle a visit to let her know there's no hard feelings, at least on their end. Michelle is then caught in her true form: That of a Demon. Ok, so, she's not actually a person. I forgot to mention that part. Michelle's former band mates are now forced to kill her, which is of course for the best, but that's not where this story ends. Later on, new singer, Jamie, shows up, looking for Michelle, in order to pick up some stage clothes she'll be needing, since Michelle won't. Well, one thing leads to another, and before we know it, Jamie is possessed by the spirit of Michelle Shock! If Sharkey thought all the Satanism, assholishness and dick-eating was over, he was mistaken. Michelle Shock was just the beginning!

It probably wouldn't be accurate to call this one of the all-time greats, but definitely one of the all-time cheesiest and most 80's shot-on-video efforts the decade had to offer. That acting had me sold from the beginning, and the Scream Dream song was every bit as catchy as it was repetitive. Real life local band, Rikk-o-Shay, gets credit for that song, as well as all of Michelle's sweet tracks. I also give the guy who played Lou Sharkey credit for making me laugh a lot with his over usage of phrases like "bite my ass, bitch" and "especially cunts on the rag". For anyone who has never seen a Donald Farmer movie, or for anyone unfamiliar with the original SOV wave, this might not be the best place in the world to start with either. However if you have experience and know exactly what you're getting into, you may have come across something remarkable. In that case, you're very welcome! 4/10

The Endless (2017) just came out on dvd...

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead make for a great filmmaking duo, having directed "Resolution" (2012) and "Spring" (2014). There's a lot of buildup in these movies, but it's all pretty quality stuff that's quite engaging.

In "The Endless", the two not only direct, but they star in the film as the two main characters "Justin" and "Aaron". How about that?

Basically, they've escaped some weird "cult" about a decade earlier, but the strange signs compel them to return to this endless pit of weird and crazy shit. Like their other two films, this movie has great production values and interesting camera work and scenery. What really grabbed me though was this slight spoiler: "The Endless" is a sequel to "Resolution".

I'd been looking forward to this movie for about a year now, and I can say I'm pretty satisfied with it. I hope to see these two continue to make weird and artsy fantasy/horror type movies.

Video Nasties: Then and Now

image

They are notorious, they are disturbing, they are brutal, but are they truly deserving of the label of a video nasty? If you are a movie buff, especially when it comes to the horror and exploitation genres you have definitely heard of the Video Nasties List that came about in the early 1980's.Those movies which were deemed obscene even pornographic. Some may have been deserving. Some of them, I have no idea how they ended up on this list.

I have included in this post the original list of Video Nasties. Now over time, I believe some of these movies were removed from the list, but I have included what I think is the full unedited list with the help of Wikipedia. I have also included all three sections of the Video Nasty List. The amount of movies they went after is INSANE! I highly doubt the people who went after these movies even watched a small portion of them. Perhaps in an act of defiance, those movies ended up wearing the title of Video Nasty as a badge of honor proudly desplaying it on their covers. Fuck the prudes that made that list!

I think I'm going to challenge myself to watch every single movie on listed here. emoticon

**FINALLY
Here are three questions for you all:**

1. After viewing the list, which movies do you feel in no way whatsoever deserved to be placed on that list? Personally, I've never understood why Axe was.emoticon

2. What movies on the list do you think actually earned the title of a Video Nasty?

3. If there were a Video Nasty List implemented today, what movies do you think would qualify to be on it and why? They can be from any decade.

The Dead Next Door - 80s zombie trash

If Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead had a baby, and that baby was raised by a steaming hunk of cheese... you'd have The Dead Next Door (1989). It has a lot of similar themes to both movies, including grey-faced zombies, mad scientists who experiment on the dead, and tons of little things.

Hell, they even show a video of "Dawn of the Dead", and "The Evil Dead" is seen on the television at one point. You know you don't have an original horror film when you're throwing around horror references any chance you can get. Almost every character is named after something related to the genre. Jason, Carpenter, Savini, Raimi... I wonder if they even knew how blatant they were being back then, because it seems a bit much... and it seems like the story is kind of thin, you know?

Either way, the cheese factor makes it pretty entertaining nonetheless. The story is shit, but something about the 80s-ness of it makes it all good fun. The gore isn't half bad either, but let's face it. This is nowhere near the aforementioned zombie epics, in terms of quality, but for a random 80s zombie movie... it ain't half bad. I'm surprised it took me so long to see this one.

Dickshark

Uh...what? I'm pretty sure Bill Zebub made this movie for the sole purpose of seeing how many "actresses" would let him fondle their boobs.

I've seen of few this guy's movies before, and I've liked none of them. Even though I was sure Dickshark would be bad, curiosity got the best of me. A movie that's about a dick that turns into a shark, and it's 3 HOURS LONG? How much material could they have possibly had to fill up 3 whole hours. The answer: None. They could have cut out 2 and a half hours, and it still would have felt long.

Bill Zebub plays a metalhead scientist who invented some sort of cream, the purpose of which is not made clear. But he packaged it as a penis enlargement cream, thinking any man would be too ashamed to try it. Of course, a man does, and it turns his dick to clay. He doesn't seem concerned at all by this, and he sculpts his dick into the shape of a shark. After his dickshark bites his finger off, his girlfriend shoots it off and it swims down the toilet. That is the extent of the plot. The rest of the movie just goes back and forth between the dickshark attacking a naked woman in slow motion while an entire metal song plays, and Bill Zebub fondling a woman's breasts while he spouts out pseudo-scientific psycho babble. Erin Brown is the closest thing to a legit actress in the whole thing, the rest I assume are either strippers or porn stars. On the plus side, it contains a ton of full frontal female nudity. Some of the actresses are attractive, some not so much. And I guess some of Zebub's dialog is mildly humorous, but not nearly enough to be worth 3 whole fucking hours.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July, to any of my fellow American citizens on here. Happy 4th to everybody else, too, although I guess it doesn't mean as much to you guys.

Just remember, keep your eyes on the fireworks at all times. Pay no attention to the jerks looting our towns and leaving us all with jack shit. That was a joke about banksters, insurance companies, Walmart, and general Wall Street dickheads, by the way, not Trump.

Jurassic Rant - Fuck the Dinosaurs

Everybody likes the first Jurassic Park movie. It was unique at the time, but here we are at the fifth movie, and nobody ever learns from their mistakes. Ever.

The newest movie is "Fallen Kingdom", in which the island with the dinosaurs has a volcano erupting, and it's going to make the dinosaurs extinct. Again. However, we already have those stupid dinosaur-rights protesters trying to save the happy critters from a fiery demise, and apparently, that's enough to get our previous protagonists back on board.

Bryce Dallas Howard has to return so she can activate the tracking system on the dinos so they can be rescued. Chris Pratt is back because he has a strong bond with the blue one. 'Blue', as she's so named, was genetically enhanced or some bullshit, and that's why Ted Levine is leading them through the jungle. Yeah, old Buffalo Bob plays one of those assholes you like to hate. Also, cool to see Peter Jason in a small and pointless role. That dude hasn't done anything big in a while.

The cast is pretty good. Jeff Goldblum is barely in it though, but there's also bad characters. I hate the cliche character who's there to bypass the technological restraints of computer systems, and this dude was the worst. Fucking annoying as shit. I wanted him to die as soon as I saw him, but in my gut, I knew he was going to make it through this entire movie, because he was a whiny bitch, but he was also the "comic relief" in this PG-13 movie. Honestly, he's the main reason I hate this movie. Fuck that asshole, and whatever demographic he's supposed to represent. Nerdy, emasculate men who manipulate technological barriers for characters, in ways that don't make sense? Also, that's a trope that should be gone from every movie. The goddamn "hacker" type who make up words and analyze complex algorithms and guess passwords in seconds. Shit doesn't work that way!

The movie felt reeeeaaallly long though. Probably because I already wasn't feeling the movie from the intro scene alone, but 2+ hours is pushing my patience with dinosaurs. Kids probably love it though, but I'm mostly apathetic to them. This movie is kind of a two-parter. The first half is a rescue-op, and the second half...

Kind of a spoiler, but I guarantee it wont surprise anyone: Dude actually wants to weaponize the dinosaurs and auction them off. With this type of movie, it isn't anything unexpected, but it's still so goddamn cliche, you wonder why they don't try anything different.

To be fair, this movie is different. A little bit. The end, although there's not much logic as to why it goes down the way it does, is still pretty interesting. It leaves the next movie with plenty of opportunities to do something different with the series, but I'm sure it'll be the same shit.

This movie still kinda sucks though. To me, anyway. I'm sure plenty of people will like it, but I hate it. I hate it because of that fucking nerd character, who gets far too much screentime for a character as lame as he was. Who's dick did his parents have to suck to get him that role? Chris Pratt is still cool though. Chris Pratt is the man.

Also, I still can't believe the whole plot of the movie... people protesting dino extinction, because dinos are living creatures too. Even though they fucking killed several people... even though our quasi-friendly dinos are killing several people... but whatever. Fuck 'em.

If dinosaurs are so great, why are they all dead? Why are they all birds now? I eat chicken for breakfast. Dinosaurs ain't so tough!
