Miami Connection (1987) - Bad movie fans rejoice!

youtube

Oh my God!

This is about an extremely cheesy, culturally diverse, synth pop band called Dragon Sound, who all happen to be black belts in Tae Kwon Do. The band's token chick has a brother who is some sort of gang leader and he doesn't like her hanging out with those losers, so basically, it's on. Would you want your sister involved in this nonsense?

youtube

Zack Attack were clearly heavily influenced by the groundbreaking Dragon Sound.

I think there may have been a little more to the plot than previously mentioned, but it was kind of hard to tell. That's not important, the real reason to watch is the preposterous acting, dialogue, and editing. Miami Connection is right up there with Samurai Cop as far as I'm concerned. You can see it on Amazon Prime, or if you don't want to pay for that it's on Tubi https://tubitv.com/home , a totally free streaming site but it does have ads.

A Ritual Killing: The History Of Begotten

image

So, here's one I never thought I'd attempt. I feel like it's important to step outside my comfort zone, sometimes, because how else could one possibly improve as a writer? So, today, I'm going to say a few words about a film I've seen quite a few times over the years, but have never really been able to come up with accurate enough words to do it justice. At least not enough of them for a full write-up. Anyone who has actually seen Begotten would understand. To be honest, I'd probably have an easier time writing about most silent films, so, I'm not even sure it'll be worth the trouble, but hey. Let's find out. This film I'm getting ready to tell you about is damned fascinating. The type of fascinating that makes one long for the drugs of yesteryear. You'll see what I mean... or not.

image Often referred to as "a nightmare caught on film". I don't know about all of that, but it's certainly different. Using dark, grotesque imagery, Begotten tells the hilarious story of a family who are in a bit of a pickle. Cindy and Bob Russell have to leave town one night after they get a call, informing them that Cindy's father has suffered a heart attack. Bob and Cindy have three children, but feel it's best not to drag them along. After coming up short on every idea for an indefinite babysitter, Bob mentions that his brother, Buck, is always available. Cindy looks down her nose at the low-class Buck and does not want his unemployed fat ass in her house, but unfortunately, there is no choice. So, Bob makes the call and as luck would have it, the good-natured Buck agrees to crawl out of bed, drive across town and help out. While relieved, Cindy is still noticeably displeased that her worthless piece of shit brother-in-law is going to dirty her beautiful home, which should indicate as to how much she loves her father.

image Buck was about to go to work for his girlfriend the next morning but has decided that his estranged family needs him more. Convenient, because Buck was not looking forward to that bullshit. All he has to do is look after a couple of kids, now. Or maybe three of them, he suspects. The two younger ones turn out to be rather pleasant, but then, there's Tia, the bitchy 15 year old who hates everyone and everything. The minute Tia lays eyes on her uncle, he is immediately added to the top of the list. Buck tries to remain jolly to maybe break the ice, but he's dead to Tia right off the bat. Why, you ask? Because fuck him! That's why!

Buck Russell is what many might call a loser. Maybe even incompetent. He really has no idea what he's doing, and these three kids could probably do just as good on their own, but there is something to be said for the man's fierce, protective nature. Although this quality angers Tia even more. Especially after Buck is a dick to her boyfriend, Bug, who, to be fair, seems like a dick, himself. Despite the death threats, Buck means well. We are soon given another example of Bucks protectiveness on little Miles' birthday when Pooter the clown shows up drunk. Pooter is ready to entertain, regardless of his condition, but Buck does not approve and tries sending the clown away. As Pooter gets mouthy, Buck cold cocks him pretty good, hopefully teaching him that it is not OK to show up shit-faced to a kid's birthday party. Maybe he had it coming, but if you knew Pooter, you would understand why he drinks so much.

image The thing is, Pooter has been very depressed as of late. He has recently come to the realization that he will never live his dream as a comedian. A long time ago, Pooter settled for this clown costume which he has come to loathe more than life itself, just so he could feel like he's at least partially in comedy. Pooter finds it humiliating and now only sees it as a reminder that he's a failure. He doesn't usually drink so much that he's still drunk the next day but last evening happened to be the anniversary of his parent's suicide, so, Pooter is understandably a little down in the mouth. All he has left of them is his sister, whom he would die for.

image Bernice is what some might call retarded. It is what it is. Pooter never developed proper social skills, and clearly, Bernice didn't either, so, neither of them know anybody besides each other now that their parents are dead. To put it as tastefully as possible, let's just say the loneliness eventually pushed the siblings into each other's arms, as they have not only fallen in love, but they regularly have intense, unprotected sex with each other. Only when the loneliness is too much to bear, you understand. Pooter doesn't feel great about it, and has contemplated ending things many times, but it's all reached a whole new level of complicated as of late. Bernice is pregnant with a potential freak baby which she wants to keep. It doesn't even seem like she completely grasps what has happened, but Pooter feels like an abortion is the right thing to do, even though it would go against everything he stands for.

If Pooter can't convince Bernice to have the half-retard incest-fetus destroyed, there's really only one route left to take: Pooter might have to abort all three of them, if you catch my drift. And probably with fire, knowing crazy 'ol Pooter. He's still not sure what he's going to do, but all he knows is the loneliness he once felt is nothing compared to this shame. So, yeah. That's why the clown was so drunk. Pooter just despises what he has become on so many levels, all he wants to do is not feel anything. Buck is a reasonable guy and I'm sure he would have been more understanding if he had known all of this

image In other news, Buck Russell eats so much cheese, he's starting to feel like a big mouse. This may be old news, and a little late in the game to make any diference because Tia continues to alienate her uncle when all he wants to do is be friends, and maybe even get to know her. Tia really knows how to push Buck's buttons, though, and he knows how to retaliate by being even more of a thoughtless oaf. Things get out of hand after Buck more or less threatens to murder Bug, which infuriates Tia, who fires the next shot by getting Buck in trouble with his girlfriend. This is exacerbated further when Melanoma-head is caught red-handed, dirty dancing with Aunt Jackie. There's no time to mourn the loss of his girlfriend, however, because Tia ran away and if Buck doesn't find her, her parents are going to be super pissed at him. As Buck's carefree life starts to crumble, he naturally steps up and does the responsible thing, eventually proving to everyone, including Tia, that he isn't a total piece of shit.

Well, atleast that's what I got from all that. The fact that there's no dialogue makes it a little hard to follow, at times, but I think that about covers it. Of course, it is all up for interpretation in the end. This mysterious little movie isn't something I have ever cared to revisit very often, as this is really something one must be in the mood for. And since I don't take psychedelic drugs very often, well, you know how it is. All I can really say is the first five or ten minutes was pretty sweet, either way. Part fish out of water Family-Comedy, part experimental art film, Begotten is truly a unique experience that you won't soon forget, regardless of whether you actually enjoy it or not. It has been said that Begotten would eventually go on to serve as inspiration for the killer movie from Gore Verbinski's The Ring. I honestly don't know how these rumors get started. Going by the premise, I just don't see it. 5/10

Since business isn't booming, we're going back to the prior technique of allowing anyone to join. It was by moderator approval only, but we've put our pants on, and we're ready to kick anyone's ass who acts like a juvenile piece of shit.

Seriously! To any users about to join... Don't be a dick. Really, it's that simple. Everyone's been a troll at one time or another, and it was fun. But some of you don't know how to troll worth a shit, and focus on all the wrong aspects of it, and get personal. Knock that shit off! And put your efforts towards something more constructive. This could be dangerous. This could be a dud. If it becomes a problem, we'll hire more mods, or go back to mod approval for new accounts. Or deal with it in any way we deem fit. The Trailer Park Boys, LIVE!

I got to see the boys, LIVE in Dallas. It was fucking great. We have a shamefully low amount of fans on this site, but the Trailer Park Boys are awesome. Truly one of my favorite acts out there, and I had a blast at their show.

To start things off, me and @der went to The Majestic theater, which is pretty classy. It's golden and artistic inside, and the seats are pretty nice. As soon as we walked in though, you could see how overpriced everything is. The shirts ranged from $40 to $70, probably because the boys are Canadian, and they don't understand the value of real money, but we'll forgive 'em. It is one of their gimmicks to be as greasy as possible.

Der needed a few drinks in him to fully enjoy the experience, so he shed at least $20 on drinks, and $20 on a raffle to hang with them. I'm insanely jealous of him, because he got to touch Randy Bobandy's fat gut. His gut was a prominent aspect of that show. Of course, the camera dicks focus on it for the majority of Randy's screentime, because it's a character in itself.

The audience interaction was pretty great too. They'd shout out lines, and rile people up. One fuckin' girl kept shouting out for Bubbles, even when he wasn't on stage. She was fucked, but goddamnit... this show was funny as hell.

Bubbles basically has a show planned, but Ricky and Randy have to duke it out before the "show" can actually begin, but it is the show. There are plenty of montage clips, and a fair tribute to Lahey. Randy had half of the audience scream "Ricky's-a" and the other half would say, "dick". A lot of the audience would scream "Fuck you, Randy!" throughout the show, and it's funny to think that this is an event where that kind of behavior is welcomed, because the boys are all about being trash.

It seems to be a staple in their stage shows to:
- Attack each other with piss, as well as the audience
- Have Bubbles sing his song "Liquor and Whores"
- Have Julian scamming the audience out of their money
- Get Randy so mad at Ricky that he has to take off the pants
- Cheeseburger jokes
- Audience participation on stage

One of my favorite bits was Randy and Ricky playing "ball-off". That's where they squeeze eachother's ballsacks as hard as they can, and whoever flinches first loses. What a fuckin' game, right?

There was also a whole "Sunnyvale Feud" gameshow that Bubbles hosted:

Bubbles: Name a green vegetable.
Ricky: An orange. Ah, fuck!

Bubbles: Name an animal smaller than a cat.
Ricky: A gorilla! Fuck! No... a 6-inch gorilla!

What a blast... These guys are as funny as they ever were. Bubbles is always the mediator, Julian didn't contribute much other than a screen presence, and Ricky was dumb as fuck, as to be expected. Randy is introduced dancing his gut out to "Jitterbug", and then he legitimately got really sweaty, as per his character.

They did a few Dallas related jokes, like talking about Whataburger, and Texans loving guns. I'm sure the specifics have to change for each city, but damn if those boys aren't great entertainers.

They Thirst, vampire novel by Robert McCammon

Anyone here ever read this? It's pretty fun, it's like Salem's Lot on a much bigger scale. It involved vampires taking over Los Angeles, with some backstory in Hungary at the beginning. It would make a hell of a movie.

I was just thinking, I wonder if it might have been one of the original inspirations for The Terminator. I had this idea partly because of the general setting, Los Angeles, and the basic story about a group of fairly normal, average people trying to head off a really overwhelming apocalypse. But, there are shitloads of books and movies about that general type of thing. What has got me thinking about this right now is that there are some scenes in a police station that gets overrun, although in this case it gets overrun by bats, not Arnold. Also, one of the characters in the police station at the time is named Reece. He is a cop, not a rebel freedom fighter from the future, but just seeing his name in the scenes when the police station gets overrun got me thinking. Also, there is a little back and forth conversation between him and another cop that makes me think of the dialog between Lance Henriksen and Paul Winfield, in The Terminator.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Night of the Living Dead (1968) Criterion Collection Blu-ray

I don't typically pick up Criterion releases, but I made an exception recently with the new Criterion release of Romero's classic zombie movie that started it all, Night of the Living Dead. Got it for about $18 altogether off of Amazon and I don't regret a single penny of my purchase.

image

First of all, the 4k remaster is absolutely beautiful and is the best it's looked on video. Way better than the numerous dollar DVD versions that are out there for sure. It also features the original workprint cut titled Night of Anibus, which doesn't differ from the final cut much at all, it's just 10 minutes shorter because it's missing a reel in the middle. Also, the quality is rougher around the edges. It's worth watching if you're curious to see how the movie was in its original form.

image

In regards to the special features, they're pretty good too. There are a lot of interviews with the cast and crew as well as a featurette that features the likes of Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro, and Robert Rodriguez. There's also the typical special features filler material like TV spots and a trailer, but I'm not complaining!

image

Overall, it's worth the purchase if you love the movie and are still into collecting physical media. My only complaint is with the Blu-ray packaging and how you have to remove the disc on top in order to get to the one below it. It's always been a pet peeve of mine when movies are packaged that way.

Documentaries About Directors

Who doesn't love a good documentary? Their purpose is to be both informative and engaging. Over the past few years I've found myself discovering and watching various documentaries about movie directors. They're more or less seen as the driving creative force of a movie and because of that, one is left to wonder how they got inspired to do what they do and what their creative mindset is like.

One of the more interesting ones (to say the least) that I just watched was David Lynch: The Art Life. It features Lynch himself going into great detail about his early life and how he became the artist he is. Really good stuff and recommended for those who like Lynch and want a taste of the bizarre! De Palma, which features Brian De Palma as the main subject is another good one. He goes into great detail about a lot of his work and experiences. I also enjoyed the recent Spielberg documentary that HBO put out along with Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures.

What are some of your favorites?

Night, Dawn or Day?

I know, I know. If you've been on the internet for more than a year, this question is like for Horror Nerds 101 (nerd? Speak for yourself, bub!) I myself have been using the internet for, Christ, about 20 years now, so I've answered this question - on multiple message boards and chatrooms - tirelessly, and with fluctuating answers at that.

I was a Dawn of the Dead junkie for a good while there (isn't everyone at some point?) Then one day (he was shooting up some food, and up from the ground...ahem, sorry) I succumbed to the brilliance of Day. It was that slow build of impending doom that you feel throughout the events of the film while our characters systematically fall apart that had me calling Day my number one for probably about 15 years or so.

But recently, I've come back around to Dawn (of course, it isn't easy to make a clear decision, since they're all brilliant). Dawn of the Dead has that awesome '70s look and feel; it essentially acts as a time capsule to a decade I never got to experience first hand. Of course, that in itself wouldn't be enough for me to call it a favorite, but luckily, it's pretty much universally agreed upon that it's a masterpiece not just in the world of horror, but filmmaking in general.

Night is the classic that started it all, but at no point in time was it ever my favorite.

So, where do you stand?
