2017 Trash Challenge Results

Well, that was just fucking awesome, wasn't it? I do believe I have a new favorite challenge. In fact, I actually considered extending it an extra month. So much more I wanted to fit in, but I ended up spending most of the challenge earning Giallo and Bikersploitation trifectas.

So, tell me, everybody. What was your favorite film of the month? What was your least favorite? And what would you say was the trashiest film you watched?

I got myself a new favorite Giallo since watching Your Vice Is A Locked Door And Only I Have The Key. Masterpiece, imo. Best FTV of the year, so far.

Least favorite? That'd be Herschell Lewis' Black Love. The all African American fuck Documentary. I don't know how to explain why I didn't like it without coming off as a total racist. Let's just say it didn't do anything for me.

And the honor of "biggest piece of trash" has to go to John Water's Multiple Maniacs, which I got a whopping 7 points for. Woulda been 8, had it been an FTV.

And the winner of the first ever Trash Challenge is none other than IMDb's own master of challenges, himself. Psychotronicbeatnik. Enjoy your victory, pally, cuz next year's going to me!

Moviedrome

Back in the late eighties here in Britain we only had four TV channels & if you didn't own a VCR, like the majority of my village, this meant movie consumption was limited & mainstream. We'd get the odd late night Universal or Hammer flick, and if you could get watchable reception for the new 'edgy' Channel 4 there was some action or comedy films on every now n then, but basically anything genre or cult was rare.

One of my mate's family had a video player, i remember very well a gang of us gathering to watch ANOES 3 Dream Warriors which one of the boys had procured from underneath his older brother's bed. The nurse scene was great, but the Jennifer Rubin gaping hole arms is the image i always recall first.

Anyway, all this changed in 1988 when BBC2 showed a series called Moviedrome, where a cult (what is cult?) movie would be introduced before being shown. Alex Cox (Repo Man 1984) was the original host up until 1994. The show returned for a couple of seasons in the late 90s when it was hosted by Mark Cousins.

Below is a list of all the films shown on Moviedrome - how many have you seen? which is your fave? why bother?

The brackets will explain the reason those movies were presented as a double bill. If there are no brackets explaining the double bill that means the BBC just showed them one after the other (or the person who's site i lifted this list from didn't figure out the link & i can't be bothered trying).

"Marjorine" episode of South Park

That is a pretty good episode for horror fans. Just casually watching it, I noticed some references to Pet Sematary, and also to that old short story "The Monkey's Paw." There are references to other horror movies in it too, as other people have noticed. Anyway, it's pretty funny. Butters's parents crack me up.... If you scroll down here, to "cultural references," there is a little discussion of what movies and stories it draws upon.

There are some more here, down at the bottom.

RIP Grandpa

My grandfather died today, age 88. I wasn't close with him, so I'm not terribly affected by it. He served in the military for a long time, so he paid his dues, but he was also a bad alcoholic, so we didn't really like him. Still, there are good memories here and there, so I felt like I should say something about the man.

One of my few fond memories of him was when I spent the night at his place, and he put a mark on his forearm and told me it was the curse of the werewolf, and stuck out his bottom teeth and acted like the wolf man.

As long as I've known him, he always seemed "old" to me, as in limited in comprehension and mobility. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. He'd been off the liquor for a few years now, but otherwise, he didn't do much, and lived in an old folks' home.

Sometimes when he'd been drinking, he'd sit at the table, morose, and tell me, "I coulda been somebody." I suppose he had a lot of regrets, because he wasn't well off, gambled a lot of his money away, and smoked like a fiend. Somehow, he lasted a while though.

I will give him an acting credit though: He played an extra in "Road to Perdition" in 2002, and got to meet Jude Law, and would always say how cool that guy was.

RIP Stanley James Stattner (1929-2017)

looking for version of Hound of the Baskervilles

I just watched the 1939 version and it's not the one I'm looking for. Could be the Hammer one, one of the 70s films, or the 1983 film, but no later than that.
The only visual I can recall fom the one I saw as a kid was a shot of the hound walking in slow motion over the moors and his eyes might have been glowing. It was a side or 3/4 shot and the hound looked really manacing. My memory could be way off though.

Anyone?

Planet of Dinosaurs (1978)

Every kid loves old fashioned dinosaur B-Movies. I know I watched them taped off late night TV when I was young. If One Million Years B.C. has higher end production values afforded to it by Hammer Studios then Planet of Dinosaurs is on the other end of the spectrum in terms of budget.

It's pretty clear whatever minimal budget they had went towards the stop motion effects for the dinosaurs. There's actually plenty of them throughout the movies runtime so that's all good.

Everything else is shot on location in a wild area. Captures the idea of being stranded on a primitive planet I suppose.

Virtually no other set or location is used except for the movie opening with a starship crash and whatever resource they had to pull that if so minimal that it shows.

At least they managed to come up with something with plenty of dinosaur action.

That theme music as well though.

The Fifth Annual Black & White Challenge

It's almost that time of year again. And I'll be continuing the Black and White tradition right here, starting April 1st.

Black and white movies only.

Even on the good 'ol HB, this challenge allowed all genres, and I see no reason to change that, now.

POINTS

Films from the 60's - present: 1 point

Films from the 50's: 2 points

Films from the 40's: 3 points

Films from the 30's: 4 points

Films from the 20's or earlier: 5 points

FTV's: 1 point

Films with color segments count as long as the color does not outway the Black and the white.

Films that are tinted count.

Films must be atleast 40 minutes to qualify.

Questions/comments/suggestions?

I'll start the progress thread in a few days.

The Three Stooges

image Any fans? I think these guys were hilarious. Really physical slapstick comedy, and there's a definite influence in the works of Sam Raimi, particularly in Evil Dead/Army of Darkness. Mel Gibson likes them too, as seen in Lethal Weapon. Those guys are bad-ass, and they know good comedy!
**
MOE Howard**, with his chili-bowl haircut... What an asshole! But still, you like him, because he drives the plot.

LARRY Fine, a mediocre tool, but that's why you like him! He's got clown hair!

then CURLY Howard! The flamboyant special ed kid with retard strength who can defeat anyone if he's feeling dumb enough. Woop woop woop!

Then... we have the neglected Stooge... SHEMP Howard! I actually like Shemp. He's kinda regular, but he's also kinda ugly, and that makes him kind of amusing.

FUCK JOE BESSER.

Curly Joe is alright.

That's SIX stooges! In the end, there is no replacement for regular Curly! He was also a ladies man.
