Anyone Else Love Pinky Films?

image

image

I Love pinky violence & girl boss films... i also like Pink films splitting at the seams with rope bondage, rape & torture... sprinkled with straight up misogyny to make the feminazis cry. Nothing makes me more happy than seeing a guy winched up and used as a fuck tool to go balls deep in his own sister....

That being said I do prefer pinky violence over the porno shite & i also love Kōji Wakamatsu arthouse type exploitation.

Here's a cool list i found on Letterboxed: https://letterboxd.com/jimdelrio/list/exploitation-101-pinky-violence-roman-porno/

Anyone else feeling the vibes?

Baaad Shit: The History Of Blood Stalkers

image

For some twenty years, when I hear the Everglades mentioned, I automatically think of this one movie I rented as a teenager. Nothing mindblowing, or overly memorable about this movie, really, but I can't recall knowing jack shit about The Everglades before I saw it. Blood Stalkers, they call it. Less commonly known as The Night Daniel Died. A backwoods, would be-Slasher from the late 70's, which makes poor attempts at also being a Bigfoot movie. Blood Stalkers more or less educated me on this infamous Florida location. Or, at the very least, taught me all I needed to know. I'm pretty sure they were trying to tell us that The Everglades sucks and to stay away forever, even if there's no actual danger. Living in far better part of Florida, which still kind of sucks, I can appreciate this message. When going on vacation, Always go North. Never South!

Two couples are nearing the end of a road trip which is supposed to culminate with a long awaited vacation in The Everglades. Mike's parents owned this cabin, which now belongs to him. Mike is determined to treat his best friend, Daniel, and the wives, to two weeks of South Floridian bliss, with the mosquitoes, humidity and all. This isn't just Florida, This is a more untamed version of Florida than what most of us may be aware of. Nobody besides Mike is into this. The wife is all sarcastic about it, and their city slicker friends seem intimidated at the thought of roughing it for a while. In this case, a while is going to be two whole weeks. And Mike basically says "tough shit" to anyone who has an issue. Mike has decided that there is not a better place on Earth to vaycay than this rundown cabin which is very literally in the middle of nowhere.

image The vacationing couples stop for gas and directions, as it's been years since Mike was out here. At first, they get the cold shoulder from the ornery old man. All questions go unanswered until they let slip where they're headed. The old man, along with his three intimidating friends, warn them to stay away. it's not entirely clear whether this is a threat or a an actual warning, but it was implied that there's some kind of creatures out there called 'blood stalkers". Although, it seemed like they may have been referring tothemselves. We still don't know what type of Horror movie this is.

image Mike wipes his ass with everyone's concerns, and drives off to find the cabin, anyway. After finally getting directions from a mute, Mike, Kim, Daniel and Jerri park a peace away and hike up to the cabin with luggage in hand, which includes a single 12-pack of beer. That's right. A two week vacation in a cabin with no electricity, nearby hostile locals, and possibly some damn thing out there. Yeah, sure. A 12-pack of beer should do nicely.

image I'll admit, this is a cool little place, but it's unclear what Mike expects everyone to do to pass the time. He just seems caught up in reliving childhood vacations. And everyone but the wife is too polite to say anything. But even Kim warms up to this ordeal a little when they find a nice place to skinny dip. Which is when the danger begins, as they're given a scare by what sounded like a Panther. But maybe not. As Mike and Kim rush back to the cabin to warn their friends, they decide not to say anything and just play it cool for a while. After a relaxing evening, things seem like they're going to be ok. As everyone heads to bed, all hell breaks loose when someone (or something) reaches through the window and grabs Jerri, rendering her husband useless, as he freezes in his tracks and begins to pour sweat for what seems like hours. The more manly Mike gets Jerri free, although, she is now catatonic due to this scare.

image Mike fires a gun several times, accidentally killing their own dog. Now, it sounds like there's someone (or something) on the roof, making some racket. If that's bigfoot up there, then, he's probably going to kill everyone. If not, then, it's probably those backwoods fucks trying to give everyone a scare before killing them. Mike then makes the most important decision of his life. He leaves the gun with Daniel, and runs off into this piss poor little town of 38 in order to find some help.

image Nobody Mike comes across wants anything to do with him. Obviously, there is something to be afraid of, and Mike is the only one who doesn't know what that is. Despite all the pleading with strangers, Mike never got any help, and never made it back to the cabin, that night. But he eventually did. And what he found there would set off a once dormant killing machine, damaged by the atrocities of Vietnam. From what we understand, Mike was always a hair away from reverting back to what he once was. However, it appears there'll be no help for Mike, this time.

Aside from the story, I don't have a hell of a lot to say about this film, simply because there's just not much that I am aware of. But I will say that was one great location they picked for this weird little film. They did a superb job capturing that backwoods vibe, along with the uncomfortable, insect-ridden humidity and isolation the tiny cast and crew had to endure. All of this, complimented by a haunting score. The cast was actually pretty good. Mike vaguely reminds me of John Denver for some reason. Toni Crabtree's character of Kim was delightful with her cokey red nose. Mike's chubby, metro-sexual pal and his stripper wife made everything all the more amusing with their one-liners. So, no complaints there.

Aside from my love of nostalgia, this movie fascinates me to no end, as many films like it always have. Blood Stalkers is one of the few remaining Horror films which has yet to get the digital treatment. And unlike so many other formerly obscure films, there's still really nothing out there in the way of information about it. Just some leftover vhs tapes if you are lucky enough to find one. This one is long overdue for a dvd/blu-ray release, along with the informative extras it will provide. But one of these days, I know it will happen, and maybe then, I can tell the real story in a review with a little less filler. But in the meantime, I'll keep on appreciating the mystery that currently surrounds Blood Stalkers. 5/10

Reviews with Ballz: The Grapes of Death

image I have seen Jean Rollin's The Grapes of Death (or if you prefer the French title, Les raisins de la mort) twice now. The first time was in 2007 after I asked for some foreign zombie movie recommendations on IMDb. I remember this being one of the main movies recommended and being a fan of some of the other French horror movies I'd seen around the same time, I sought this one out promptly.

Well, to put it simply: I was disappointed.

I imagine the main thought in my mind at that time was: where the fuck are the zombies? By standard ideas of what counts as a zombie both back when this was made and now, the things in this movie are not what I would call zombies and quite frankly, I certainly wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for zombie movies, at least not without a warning.

image However, having forgotten most of what actually happens in the movie outside of the opening and the music that accompanies it, I recently decided to give it a second try, this time with more of an open mind, which admittedly, I probably lacked back in 2007. And with that open mind, I've realized that this has a lot more in common with The Crazies (original and remake) than any particular zombie movie. It's still not a movie I want to go out of my way to buy anytime soon, but do I still hate it?

Let's find out with another... Reviews with Ballz!

image The Grapes of Death starts out simple enough. Some guys are working at a vineyard and are spraying the grapes with some kind of chemical. Almost right away though, you see that one of the guys is in some discomfort and you soon find out that he's not feeling well because of the chemicals. His boss takes no pity on him, telling him to get back to work, with the promise of better masks arriving the next day for the workers. As you probably guessed by now though, the damage has already been done.

image The movie then goes to the interior of a train where you meet Élizabeth (Marie-Georges Pascal, who I'm not even going to pretend to know from anything else). From here you follow her for the rest of the movie in her quest to reach her fiancee, who happens to be one of the workers at the vineyard. It's not long though before the worker complaining of not feeling well at the vineyard boards the train and sits down in the same compartment as Élizabeth. She notices a gross mark on his neck, partially covered up by his hair. At first she just stares, but as the mark spreads, she runs out of the compartment screaming and finds an emergency break to stop the train so that she can get off.

Now, it's here that I realized that the zombies in this movie are far different from any other zombie I've ever seen in any movie, TV show, video game, or book. Because instead of chasing Élizabeth endlessly, he gives up when she proves to be too fast for him and proceeds to sit down on the train tracks, looking rather depressed. Walkers, runners, or a mix of that's controlled by a parasite, I've never seen a zombie give up and sit down just because a victim proved to be too fast for them.

image After this point, the movie really starts to get going and you watch as Élizabeth ventures through the French countryside, looking for anyone else along the way who hasn't been affected by the chemicals from the vineyard. More about what's going on exactly is also revealed, such as the spots that appear on people is actually rot. I guess that's why people call this a zombie movie, but considering that they can talk and even are capable of acting normal around Élizabeth when they want to be, I still disagree with calling them zombies.

image To answer my question from before, no, I don't still hate this movie. It definitely has some flaws as far as the plot goes and the low budget definitely shows at more than one point, but I feel that if you watch it knowing ahead of time that it's not really a zombie movie, you'll probably get some enjoyment out of it. It's also far from the goriest movie I've ever seen, but there's a few moments of decent gore. The rotting spots on the crazed people also look pretty nasty, especially when they start oozing.

If you're in the mood for some old school, low budget, European horror, you'll probably like this. My rating: 3/5

90's Horror: An underrated decade.

So most people site the 90's as being a terrible decade for horror and being the worst. While certainly not the best I think it is very underrated when you get by all the Scream clones and style and really delve into the decade you find some real gems. I had a list on IMDb but when my account got deleted I lost the list. I made another one of films I like from the 90's but might be forgetting some. OT: I, Daniel Blake

With the IMDB boards gone, I have limited options to post and discuss this film so I thought I'd give it a try here.

I, Daniel Blake is Ken Loach's second Palm d'Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival. I watched it at the local cinema recently and was quite affected by it. The premise is an older guy in Britain who's been working as a carpenter for the best part of 40 years, has a heart attack and his doctor/specialist tells him he's not fit for work for at least 3 months. He goes on what the Brits call the Employment and Support pension to get him through while he recovers. A review of his eligibility for this pension happens, which occurs at the start of the film with just black screen and credits while we listen to the ludicrous questions thrown at him to which he replies with frustration and sardonic humour. Of course, the outcome is that his '˜score' has lowered and he is now forced to look for work for 35 hours a week.

He has the the right to appeal the decision as long has he can negotiate the absurd bureaucratic red tape including phone calls that involve being on hold for a couple of hours only to be told that he has to wait for the '˜decision maker' to call him before he's allowed to appeal, even though he's received a letter already outlining the decision. He's also directed to a computer by social security and told he has to apply online, which for a bloke who's never touched a computer in his life, is quite a task. He's told by the worker when explaining his IT deficiencies that "we're digital by default" to which he responds "I'm pencil by default".

This is a guy who has specialised skills as a carpenter made to feel like a useless bane on society. He befriends a younger woman with kids at the dole office whom he defends when she is treated like some sort of unhinged banshee when she gets upset that her benefit has been frozen. Like most of Loach's films we get see to ordinary people in extraordinarily frustrating circumstances that wear them down.

There's some that criticise this film for being over the top with it's depiction of how these people are treated by the Government. I came into this film with 20 years experience working in the Australian job centre (employment services) system, funded by the Government to administer the rules behind receiving the dole whilst helping people find jobs. Help find people jobs! If only our employment consultants, working with an unmanageable amount of clients, hired by the Government to administer the red tape involved in ensuring all of their job seekers meet their '˜requirements', had time to actually help people find jobs! You also have an industry riddled with people who are ill-equipped to work with, empathise with and assist those coming in with a range of complex issues that need to be addressed.

I watched the system gradually decline over the years into the highly bureaucratic machine that it has become designed, whether it be deliberately or not, to make people give up all hope. It got so bad that I had to get out, no matter how well it paid, as I couldn't take the absurdity of it all any longer. I can understand that you need to make a system robust and consistent to ensure people are treated equally, but it swayed way too far into the realm of Orwell's 1984. Individual circumstances are not heard, nor have any place in this autocratic system. Our Government even went as far recently to adopt a robotised computer system to work out who has been wrongly paid and owes a debt to the Government. This flawed computer system does not take into account the many individual situations that actually deem people eligible for the money they're being accused of receiving either mistakenly or fraudulently. Then there's that brick wall of bureaucracy they need to try and negotiate to appeal, many of which are incapable of navigating.

You may feel after watching this film that you've been emotionally manipulated and the circumstances presented must have been embellished for dramatic effect, but believe me, this stuff is real.

Back to Daniel himself, a hard working tax payer and contributor to society with integrity, dignity and empathy for his fellow man, made to feel like like a parasite. In his own words "I'm not a client, a customer or a service user... I'm not a National Insurance number or a blip on a screen. I, Daniel Blake, am a citizenβ€”nothing more, nothing less."

Dark Justice 1991-1993 (TV show)

Something reminded me of this show recently. When I just googled it, I was surprised to see that it aired on CBS... I would have guessed the USA Network. Anyway, does anyone else remember this show? I think I watched at least half a season, at some point. I always liked the intro. Also, check out the wikipedia article, apparently Bruce Abbott played the main role in the second season! I actually thought the guy in season one was pretty great, but... whatever, it's good if Bruce Abbott got a little work, there.

The Greasy Strangler or WTF did I just watch?

I had been hearing quite a lot about this movie so I figured I'd give it a shot. This is probably the weirdest movie I've ever seen. I went from laughing hysterically to gagging in the span of 30 seconds. There are things in this movie that I never thought I'd see or actually never even crossed my mind. I will never eat a hotdog the same way again. Has anyone else seen this and if so, what were your thoughts? It's unique to say the least.

Ten Most Brutal Revenge Movies of the 21st Century

Revenge movies have been around for donkey's years (anyone know which was the very first one?), and of course it was always one of Shakespeare's favourite themes. But the new century has seen it's fair share of vengeance being served up very, very coldly.. And who doesn't enjoy seeing justice, rightly or wrongly, being dished out. In brutal fashion. Here is a list of the ten of the most brutal of retributions. And yes there will be obvious omissions no doubt, i.e. I was going to include Martyrs and A Serbian Film, which have revenge elements but they do not really drive the main narrative of the plot.

Anyhow, there shall be SPOILERS ahead..

10. Dead Man's Shoes (2004)

image

It's not the most graphic movie on the list but it definitely leaves a punch (literally) and it's main protagonist (and ultimately antagonist) played by Paddy Considine, is one scary nutjob.
Herbie: "What the fuck are you looking at?"
Richard: "You, ya cunt!"

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: That punch..

9. Kill Bill: Vol.I (2003)

image

OK, some may not agree with the inclusion of this choice. It's certainly not as brutal as many others on this list, or even excluded.. but it certainly is bloody. And bloody good fun too. I just had to include it on this list..

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Actually appears in Vol.II: Elle Driver will need another eye patch..

8. The Horseman (2006)

image

A man witnesses the brutal, sexual attack of his daughter on video and sets off a path of retribution. Cue some good old-fashioned violent rampaging.. Aussie style.

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Blowtorch.. knife.. there's plenty of brutal torture to enjoy here.

7. Revenge: A Love Story (2010)

image

A list of this nature simply wouldn't be a list without the inclusion of a CAT:III movie. And this modern one is harsh.. very harsh indeed. OK, so it becomes a little far fetched as the reasons for our protagonist's quest for revenge become more clear but that's all the more reason for some good ole cringe-inducing violence. This is probably one of the lesser known titles from this list.. but comes recommended.

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Skin scrapping.. 'nuff said.

6. Oldboy (2003)

image

The list just wouldn't be complete without, probably the most acclaimed and famous revenge movie of the century thus far. And what a twist. Oh, and fuck the remake..

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Well you have some good old-fashioned dental torture, cutting out your tongue with a rusty pair of scissors, but the gang fight in a hallway scene is definitely the most "fun"..

5. I Spit On Your Grave (2010)

https://assets.mubi.com/images/film/30669/image-w1280.jpg?1445876769

2010 was a good year for pay-back time, and hell hath no fury like a woman.. raped, beaten and left for dead in this remake of the 1978 shocker. This is one of those few occasions, where, honestly, it is better than the original.. although the rape scene does not last as long and is perhaps not as brutal, the act of pay-back most certainly is and there is wealth of "enjoyable" torture scenes.

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Nothing more satisfying than watching one of your attackers get his eyes pecked out by some hungry crows..

4. Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (2002)

image

The most brutal of Park Chan-wook's "revenge trilogy", South Korea is probably top of the pile when it comes to dishing out revenge movies in the 21st Century. Other honourable mentions include The Chaser, A Bittersweet Life, Bedevilled, The Man From Nowhere.. but there is something about the tone of Park Chan-wook's eye-for-an-eye-for-an-eye saga that leaves you reeling with discomfort. Maybe it is the absence of music or the bleak cinematography.. or the fact you just end up feeling wretched and downright sorry for everyone involved..

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Take your pick but watching Bae Doona's character wet herself after electric cables are attached to her ear lobes.. is pretty gutwrenching.

3. I Saw The Devil (2010)

image

Yes we are back in South Korea again for what is one of the most downright mean-spirited (and beautifully shot) movies on this list. And in terms of sheer amount of brutal, graphic violence, I Saw The Devil probably wins hands down. And this is no straight forward revenge thriller, as the line between the victim and the aggressor/protagonist and antagonist becomes somewhat blurred as the movie progresses and by the end, we're left just feeling.. well, numb.

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Another case of "take your pick" but the opening murder scene leaves the biggest impression.

2. Red, White & Blue (2010)

image

A horror movie with a measly, and unwarranted rating of 6.4 on IMDb (yeah. remember that site).. I guess the slow pace of the first half, which focused on the bonding of two people, was too much for some folks (Audition anyone?).. where's the horror?! Where's the gore?! Well like all good slow-burners, it is saved for the last act and it's one of those effective movies where it's what you don't see, that leaves the viewer queasy.. And what a performance from Noah Taylor as a complete psycho, pushed over the edge after losing his new "kitten" and doing what he does best... murder!

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: After the home invasion, did he kill the young girl or leave her alive? Or is peeling off someone's face from the neck up more disconcerting..

1. Irreversible (2002)

image

No real surprises here for what is my number one "most brutal revenge movie" of the 21st Century.. or ever probably. The disconcerting and disorientating camera-work during the opening of the movie deliberately sets the viewer up to feel nauseous, so that when we get to that infamous scene in the subway.. those of nervous disposition will just want to run to the bathroom. It is one of the very few times I can remember when I actually wanted to stop a movie during a violent scene to take a breather. It's a fantasitc movie, that rightly divides people down the middle. It also has a beautiful, uplifting ending.. or beginning.. oh yeah, shit happens.

MOST BRUTAL SCENE: Well.. there are two to choose from. And I think most of us can all agree on which is the more stomach-churning..
